[GMCnet] Need some input [message #138210] |

I am still working on my 73 GMC, The engine battery keeps going dead over 3
to 4 days. I have disconnected all house wiring and turned off all breakers
in back and pulled all fuses to house system. What if anything up front
would cause current draw with everything turned off? The battery relay is
not energized, radio un pluged, 2nd battery, same problem.
Now today, I have been starting and running motor and going on short trips
to town, 40 miles, this evening I went to move it and it started no problems
and quit running after about 50 feet, will not re-start there is gas going
to carb., any chance this could be related?

Let's start ast the basics.
First, have you disconnected the enigine battery for 3 or 4 days and then tried to see if it will start the engine when the battery is reconnected? It could be a bad battery.
Second, if it does start then turn every thing off on the engine side and disconnect the battery. Take multimeter on the 10 amp scale and hook it between the disconnected cable and the battery post. What does it read? If it reads very low then reduce the scale and read it again. The reading you get is the amount of draw you have on the battery when the coach is sitting idle.
Now start pulling fuses one at a time looking for the item that is draining your battery.
You can do the same procedure on the house battery.
The house battery and the engine battery are two completely separate systems.

Serge - just for the hell of it, unplug the harness to the alernator for two or three days, and then plug it back and see if the battery has drained or not. A leaky diode while not at all common, can cause this.
A quick and dirty way to find the drain is to disconnect >all< the wires which connect to the battery hot lead. Then one at at time, touch them to the terminal they were connected to. When one draws a spark, you have the one which is drawing current. Chase it down in the same manner till you find the culprit.

Hardwired propane and/or carbon monoxide detectors will drain battery!

the big power wire that feeds to rear battery, on my 75 it ran across bottom or radiator. insulation looke good til i touched it, then insulation would just fall off. if insulation is that bad would it not drain battery fairly quickly with insulation working more has a resister than an insulator?

Rather common problem. 30 some odd years of PO's and "qualified" RV repairmen sometimes have "interesting" results.
Take your time and check everything against the manual for what is "supposed" to be there. If it isn't in the manual AND if you do not know EXACTLY what it does -- remove it.
If all else fails return the coach to OEM.
