Recently I received a request to do a design reminiscent of the ¹46-¹52
"Woody Wagon" produced by Ford Motor Company. I responded to the email
stating my typical fee. I also said if they wanted an image as a freebie
they'd need to wait a while. So far, no response. The reason I thought it
would take a while was because I'd need to take time to learn a new
technique or spend a lot of time creating a wood-looking fill for the
artwork (I don't use PhotoShop).

Well, the challenge got to me. That and my curious nature. I'm addicted to
learning new stuff -- it must be my computer gene.

The process meant a bit of research though I well remember riding in a
1951 woody when my dad was a Junior Legion Baseball coach. Back then Ford
was a corporate sponsor and each team had access to a wagon to be supplied
through a local dealer.

In the process of looking for information I checked the look that GM did
of the style. They tended to move from the wood look rather abruptly. Of
course, their treatment was quite different, too. Ford held on to showing
more wood tone even though they replaced real wood with a paint process by
1953. Even the Chrysler PT Cruiser Woody favored the Ford style.

One of the things to decide was how to carry out that look on the GMC.
With that in mind I present "Nostalgia: Woody's Return". For this the
window surrounds will need a color change to compliment the framing of the
simulated wood planking (unless you choose to use the real thing). Note
also that I put a model name near the kitchen window of the 23-foot coach.
This wasn't the typical location used on the GMC. By the way, I wouldn't
attempt this on a 26.

http://www.songerconsulting.net/gmcmhart/

Scroll down the page and take a gander. Scroll some more and you'll spot
the trailer design I did for Ray Erspamer (which can now be seen following
them on vacation, finally).

I hope you enjoy it.

By the way, there are some beautifully restored woody wagons out there.
I'm waiting for Bill Brown to want one. This will be our second timeshare
unit.

Beautiful work Byron. I liked the blue and white one really well. Woody's are not my thing, but your ideas are good.

The blue and white is my design, just my illustration of work done by
Topeka Graphics. John Wright, I believe, had the first of that scheme but
in red/wine tones. The second painted was the blue toned beauty.

I understand that wood may not be your favorite. To each his own.

I'll be doing a presentation at GMCMI in Goshen on what makes for a good
design and what makes for butt ugly (which is close to coyote ugly).

Also, on further thought, if I can talk Bill Brown into the yacht, Camin,
I think we'll make it the primary timeshare, the Futureliner #2 and a
restored woody #3. Problem is that neither of us have enough money or
friends with tons of cash. Shucks, we can't count on Uncle Sam either.

I like the idea, but the body of the coach could be much lighter.

Correction to an earlier response -- the blue/white is NOT my design.

As to the color selection -- I messed with many different color values.
After about an hour I quit. I'll give it another try when my mind isn't
experiencing vapor lock (or something akin to that).

Here's what my model was. http://www.cruisenewsonline.com/51FordWoody.html
Luscious vehicle!

Nice car.
Funny thing about those Ford woodies, the picture is a '51 but the dash is '49-'50. They are all like that for some reason.
Note the door handles are gone, too.
I would like to see a GMC done up with the panelling, etc.

Byron, the picture of that 51 ford woody brought back a memory for me. I was
about 14 and my mothers cousin Keith Campbell had one. They piled all of us
kids into the woody and went to the local Tastee Freeze for some soft ice
cream cones. That was the first time I ever kissed a girl, her name was
Coleen Campbell, a red haired beauty of about my age, and she tasted like
tastee freeze ice cream. Can't hardly drive by a dairy queen without
thinking about that taste and kiss. Still like both.

Funny thing about that photo. It say 51 but I thought the two-bullet grill
didn't show up until 52. Maybe the VIN is a 51.

Good memory. Thanks for sharing it. Particularly meaningful coming from
you.

So, Coleen was a relative. Are you from Arkansas? You know, if you're from
Arkansas you go to family reunions to meet girls.

That is definitely a '51.

'49 and '50 had single bullet in grille.
'49 had turn/park lights at end of center bar.
'50 had them in a chrome housing below the center bar and outside center area.
'51 got the twin bullets with turn/park lights similar to '50.

Mac,

They made a UTE here that has the same front end but it's got a pickup truck
bed in the back.

I would love to have one as a run around!

Definitly a 51 ford.  52's had a new body & back to a slim 1 bullet grill.

Byron

I think I made a big mistake. I showed the artwork to LL. She thinks it's really neat. She's always loved vehicles "in the crate". She was talking this morning about how to do it on the sidekick so it would match. Cheeze - I can only hope it wears off or she forgets. Doesn't appear likely.

Byron,

The first Ford UTE was sold in 1932

http://www.fastlane.com.au/Features/First_ute.htm

WAAAAAY before the Ranchero (1957) or El Camino (1959)!

Also before the Holden (GM) UTE (1951):

http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/ArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=42746

Both Ford and Holden still make them. They build some of them with AWESOME
power packages and they go like a "shower of s#!t" as Aussies say!

Interesting. Before the Ranchero made it here.

Byron - no reflection on your talents, but I had enough wood when I was a teenager and had to drive my mother's Ford Country Squire, then my Dad's Dodge mini-van with faux wood. Yeech!

I hated it then and I hate it now. I think I was scarred - I don't even want an SUV. They look too much like station wagons.

They quit building those things for a good reason.
