What should I look for in a good charger? Which specs are more important to look for?

I have three of the HF float chargers, I bought them on sale and tried one out. I did not discover that all the red light means is that the red light is on until it was too late to take them all back. It did my tractor no good at all. I haven’t even opened the other two. You might try one, but mark the date and put the receipt on the refrigerator so if it works as well as the one I tried, you can take it back.

The inexpensive “battery maintainers I have seen are just ~12.5Vdc (typically unfiltered) wall worts with alligator clips. They sort of work, but they seem to either - not keep a battery at full charge or - cause it to lose water over time. (Pick one).

Isn’t this a great help?

I’m trying out an electronic de-sulphiter. That seems to have worked for one battery, but I need more sample testing to be sure.

13.25 volts forever, called "storage mode"

not much good as a 40 smart charger, but just what the dr. ordered for a
"maintainer"

I have one and its utility is very limited. If the battery is already to low, this will not work at all. But it is NOT a charger. It is only to "maintain a battery" keeping it from dropping to a level that the engine will not start.

I use mine on our Audi that sometimes isn't driven for months. Before it would drain the battery to where the engine would not start in just under two weeks. (Then the "smart" charger would Identify it as a 6 volt battery and would not charge it....)

Anyway... I cut the clips off the HF maintainer and installed a plug. I plug it into the cigarette lighter so I do not need to open the hood... who wants to leave the hood up for weeks to months?

Works well for the use it was designed for.

Matt,

Which model are you trying?

I am thinking I want to open the purse and get a small
'smart charger' which will both charge, maintain and de-sulphite
2 or 3 bikes at once.

Thanks!

Richard,

I am currently evaluating Battery Desulfator from Whizbangplus.com.
I scoured the available websites first and this one came up the most realistic.

More will be published as when I have more than anecdotal data.
Please be patient, this may take a while.

Matt

Yes, they are smart. Shumaker, or something like that, all 3 of them. Walmart has them for about 20 bux. Comes with pigtail and clips. I put the pigtail on the scooter so I just plug the thing in when we leave for the winter.
