I got a call today from a fella who has a 1976 that was running about 210 degrees. He was driving at 67 mph and the outside temp was 94 degrees. He asked me if I thought it was too hot. I told him I would post up and find out. What are your thoughts? Should he worry or just run with it? He says that if he slowed down to 60 it ran around 200. If he stopped and let it idle it quickly went down to 190.

My 76 Dick Paterson built 455 always runs at 210 degrees. The temp is read with a cheap mechanical temp gauge that I took out of the coach and put it in water and boiled it and the gauge tracked 212 boiling so I assume it is accurate.

You need to monitor the temp each time you drive so that you can relate to ambient tempature , load and other conditions like having an air conditioning on.

A little hot for my tastes . I'd put a 180 Robert Shaw thermo in it and see
what happens . If he isn't using a mechanical gauge then only a trend will
be witnessed as the actual number is unknown .

this has been discussed at length before. once the thermostat is open it doesn't matter which one you use.
i saw this at work this weekend. going to a rally it was 95+ and pulling hills my temp gauge reached the 1/2 mark and the Digi panel light went to the orange color at 210.
coming home it was about 80 deg. and the temp gauge sat at just over 1/4 and the Digi panel stayed in the green at just over 175.
