I got a call today from a fella who has a 1976 that was running about 210 degrees. He was driving at 67 mph and the outside temp was 94 degrees. He asked me if I thought it was too hot. I told him I would post up and find out. What are your thoughts? Should he worry or just run with it? He says that if he slowed down to 60 it ran around 200. If he stopped and let it idle it quickly went down to 190.

My 76 Dick Paterson built 455 always runs at 210 degrees. The temp is read with a cheap mechanical temp gauge that I took out of the coach and put it in water and boiled it and the gauge tracked 212 boiling so I assume it is accurate.

Hi ,

A little hot for my tastes . I'd put a 180 Robert Shaw thermo in it and see
what happens . If he isn't using a mechanical gauge then only a trend will
be witnessed as the actual number is unknown .

I try to keep mine to under 200 but as long as it stays below 220 I don't worry. My car runs newer car runs around 210 to 220.

The original thermostat was 195 and the clutch fan should have come on at 190 or so. I put one of the Robert Shaw 180 thermostat in mine. My clutch fan comes on at about 195. It varies depended on fast the temp increases.

When I had a direct drive fan my engine never got over 200 even when driving hard. It was noise and hurt gas mileage. I had several clutch fans that would not engage even when the engine temperature was 220. I took one up to 240 and it still did not work. My concern is what is my oil temperature. I have seen my oil pressure start dropping when driving hard and that is when I get worried. For my thinking the engine temperature below 220 is not a problem if my oil pressure is ok. I keep meaning to put a temperature sensor on my oil.

You need to monitor the temp each time you drive so that you can relate to ambient tempature , load and other conditions like having an air conditioning on.

That begs the question, what is the difference between temperature of the water at the top of the engine (temp sensor) and the middle of the radiator? Now, what's the difference in temperature between the water at the middle of the radiator and the air that hits the fan clutch?

My imagination has an easy time believing that 20 degrees could be lost between the sensor and the fan clutch. 210 degree water at the sensor and 190 degree fan clutch might just be normal. And, as it's been said earlier, the thermostat only determines how cold the engine will get, not how hot it gets.

Anyone???

this has been discussed at length before. once the thermostat is open it doesn't matter which one you use.

i saw this at work this weekend. going to a rally it was 95+ and pulling hills my temp gauge reached the 1/2 mark and the Digi panel light went to the orange color at 210.

coming home it was about 80 deg. and the temp gauge sat at just over 1/4 and the Digi panel stayed in the green at just over 175.
