Browsing around the photo site I just happened upon Gary's great photos detailing the development of his aluminum intake manifold. He must have a ton of hours into this thing, but the result sure is nice.

Thank you Gary. You've done a good thing for us, and when my piggy bank is too full I'll stuff one of your manifolds under my hatch.

Take a look - this is quite a journey.

Thanks for the kind words. I know sometimes people complain about the
price, but they have no idea what it really cost to make.

This was a really good learning experience for me. I am very proud of the
fact that Joe Mondello himself purchased several manifolds and his company
continues to do so. Cinnabar, Sirum, GMC Coop, Grandview, and Applied GMC
also use them all quite sucessfully. Several of the fuel injection
companies have used them too.

I have been running mine for several years now. I realy like the fact that
my engine compartment is much cooler, I did not have to raise the dog house,
nor did I have to deal with putting heavy metal into an already heavy cast
iron manifold.

This was really a GMC club effort. All lot of fellow GMCers pitched in to
help as well.

Gary, I had Jim K's guys put the new aluminum manifold on before we went to
the Western States Rally in May. What a difference. My wife and I don't
smell raw gas anymore every time we stop. The design of the aluminum
manifold fixed that problem.

Great job Gary!

It's been a while since I've seen "cloud point" data, SLA models and real patterns. Very Happy

Gary,

What's the recommended torque for the intake bolts for the aluminum manifold ? Is it the same as the cast iron?

Chris, glad you got your's. They are expensive but it is a one time "fix". I thought about it for a long time then just did it. There was nothing wrong with my old one. It had been repaired where it cracked. I love looking through my glass engine cover and seeing that nice looking manifold. Thanks from me too Gary for all of your time and money spent on this deal.
I hope you, Gary, can show up at Goshen or Eastern States in Milan.

Same. The torque rating is for the fasteners, not the intake manifold
itself. Start from the middle and work out, alternating sides, do this
several times. I've gone around as many as 6 times to achieve the correct
torque.

Steve,

I agree with you, however, here's the strange thing. The MM manual says to
torque from the outside in and so does the Edelbrock instructions. I called
Edelbrock tech support and got a young kid who, after looking up their
instructions, said something along the lines of; "you're right, let me ask
Joe, he's been here for years, maybe he'll know." He put me on hold for a
few minutes and when he came back on he noted that Joe told him Edelbrock
copied what Olds said to do. The last time we discussed this on the GMCnet
we came to the conclusion that it might have been done like that because the
OEM gasket is the turkey tray which is very thin. If you use a fiber gasket
with a block off plate then you go from the inside out. I just looked at my
1972 Caddy 500 manual and it too has a turkey tray; the intake manifold
instructions just say to torque the bolts down to 30 ft lb but don't give
the sequence.

Rob,
I only do what works and the method I use is tried and true. However, I
also would never use a turkey tray either.

Well, it's time to crash the piggy-bank on the floor and buy the manifold. I brought the coach to Applied and asked Nick to install the blocking plates. I'm running out of time for next week's jaunt.

He reports that the manifold is cracked and sucking oil <sigh>.

Perhaps this will reduce the stink we get from the engine when idling and after shut down. Now I need Dan's glass hatch, not because my engine is so pretty, but because I want to see my money! ;~)

Where would I be without Garry's aluminum manifold? Trying to find a foundry to repair the thing or raising a dog-house on the hatch to allow another manifold?

Sheesh. I am kind of excited to try it out. Now my list is getting small, let's see, Reaction Arms, Hublers, Howell TBI, EBL, Odyssey seats, new wheels, paint, upholstery, Fantastic Fans, Pertronix for the Onan, spruce up the cabinets, new counter top.

It's getting much closer. I'll have it done before I'm 85, for sure!

The Rockwell manifold is not needed on the 403. Use an Edelbrock non EGR
Performer. Clears the hatch cover, because the 403 has a shorter block
height measurement. Block the exhaust crossover and you are good to go.

No need for it on the 403, and no, it's only for the 455. There are other manifolds that will fit the 403, and since the engine is smaller the carb does not interfere with the hatch cover. Besides the manifolds on the 403's don't crack as readily as the 455's. Lucky me.

Larry, I do enjoy looking at my money through the glass. Got a few other things I can see there also. I can not see the reaction arm braking but I can sure feel it when I touch the pedal. That has got to be the one thing I am the most happy with. I smile and think of Chuck A. everytime the light turns red.
