From the SEMA Legislative News Letter June 30, 2011

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will require an orange-and-black label be placed on fuel pumps dispensing gasoline with 15% ethanol (E15). The label will warn consumers not to use the fuel in vehicles older than model-year 2001 since it could cause damage. The EPA had previously approved the sale of E15 for vehicles made in MY 2001 or later, actions opposed by SEMA. While making it "illegal" to use E15 in older vehicles, the agency placed the burden on the motorist not to misfuel the vehicle. The EPA agreed with SEMA that the corrosive effects associated with E15 posed a risk to these vehicles. In comments previously submitted to the EPA, SEMA opposed the labeling rule as inadequate protection.

Several lawsuits have been filed to overturn the EPA's decision to allow the sale of E15. It may take months or even years to resolve the suits. SEMA-supported legislation has also been introduced in Congress to block implementation of the E15 rulings. SEMA will continue to oppose E15 until there are conclusive scientific findings that demonstrate that it will not harm automobiles of any age as a result of corrosion or other chemical incompatibilities. SEMA has consistently voiced concern that ethanol increases water formation, which can then create formic acid and corrode metals, plastics and rubber. SEMA represents thousands of companies that market products for these vehicles and, through its SEMA Action Network, millions of enthusiasts who buy and operate these automobiles.

It would seem that the current E-10 is already causing enough damage to older machines that perhaps they may have a point and can succeed in their lawsuit.

We all like clean air, but is the ethanol really helping? I'd love to see some actual scientific results that haven't been spun by the various factions!

SEMA is one group that is at the nationwide forefront of this issue and many others in regards to antique vehicles.

I would too.  Until a few years ago, I almost never saw a burining car beside the road.  Now, it's a monthly occurrance.  I got to wonder, is this due to alcohol in the fuel, or the higher line pressure used in injected engines, or (c) all of the above?

The cars that I remember burning most frequently started with the VW
squarebacks and 72 & later fuer injection VW busses. The hoses that VW first
used were not up to the task after a few years in the ozone atmosphere of So
Cal. I worked on a lot of those things. The higher temperatures in the
engine compartments coupled with heavy laden air cooled engines was a recipe
for a burn job. Later CIS cars like the Rabbit & Jetta & Fox autos had good
high pressure lines and banjo fittings. The GMC has some similarities to the
VW busses. Poorly cooled engine compartments, heavily laden, crappy fuel
line material given the current state of our fuel supply. We need to be ever
vigilant in our quest for the ultimate hoses. It is out there, but is not
cheap, and it doesen't last forever with oxygenated fuels. We can complain
about the stuff, but we are faced with the reality of having to deal with
it. Can't just curse the dark, we must seek the light. Enough philosophy
