Back in April, D C "Mac" Macdonald asked if anyone had tried the new Advent roof top a/c units. At that time, it seems no one had.
So, now has anyone? I read where they're supposed to be from some of the people that used to work for Dometic/Duotherm (?)
What about other brands? Has anyone bought a new roof top unit in the last couple of months, and can you share your thoughts on it?
We're contemplating rearranging our roof top equipment and removing a 15,000 btu unit we bought brand new last year, and replacing it with a 13,500 unit. We wanted some opinions on brands, etc.
Thanks,
John

John, we have replaced our front and back units with Air V by Carrier. Rear
is a 13.5 and front is 15. We are VERY pleased with them, especially living
in Texas. Came through Wichita Falls with 115 temp last Wednesday. At RV
park at 5:20 p.m. temp was 111, so we just turned 'em both on for about and
hour. That cooled us down enough to shut down the rear and run only the
front for the rest of the night.
Go Carrier! However we have heard they stopped making them for RVs...

I'd also highly recommend the Carrier Air V. I bought a low profile one from JimK last year, and it's been great.
I'd check with JimK and also check eBay or elsewhere on the internet to see if you can still find one.

Dometic issued a news bulletin. they are apparantly visually knockoffs of their units. They do come with a 2 yr no hassle warranty, though. I have carrier low profiles. Buy them if you can find them...

eBayed Black 15K Carrier V last month to match the one I got last year. Looked way to long and hard to find it and paid $300. more than last year. This is another Honda Gen. like situation. Keep looking!

John, I have an almost new Carrier V low profile 15,000 BTU that I no-longer need however, it has now been sold 7/15/2011. It's set-up for a ducted install with remote control http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=18759&title=the-rear-unit-was-inst&cat=4601 . I bought a heat pump unit to replace the rear one on my Eleganza II. I planned to use the one from the GMC on my Spectrum. I subsequently fixed the central air system on the Spectrum so it doesn't need the take off unit from my GMC. This unit has seen very little use as I run only the front AC most of the time. Send me a private message if you are interested.

Hopefully Carrier may decide to start building them again if demand goes up, especially on the OEM market. I haven't heard of anyone that has one that doesn't like it.
If not, perhaps another manufacturer would pick up the manufacturing rights. They really are great units (though they did have a recall on the heater units).

If someone looking for a low profile only finds the roof top unit -- I have an extra new ceiling unit with heat strip for the ac and a new ducted ceiling unit for a heat pump unit (with remote)
email direct if interested.

"Tall person" question here: How does this type unit affect ceiling height? Does a ducted unit hang down farther?
I can really walk around in my GMC with the older units.
My old units work fine, but I'm trying to learn.

You probably couldn't walk in my coach. I lowered the ceiling 4" to make the duct and add denim insulation up there. I'm only 5'6" so there...

Stick, they can be mounted so that they are only about 1/4" lower than a standard ceiling mounted grill assembly.

George,
Don't hold your breath!
Carrier is a division of the United Technologies Corporation, I worked for
the Hamilton Sundstrand division for 33 years.
The corporation would insist on divisions axing any business that did not
make at least 15% return and improve that figure each year.

And some wonder why so much manufacturing business has gone offshore from the USA. I have not heard of a foreign made RV AC unit yet, but it is only a matter of time I expect. And eventually the quality will be there, remember when we used to snear at something "made in Japan" and now that is the highest quality in most cases. I would expect China will be next. Even now almost all Apple computer products are sourced in China and have a very very low rate of failure.
Please, no wars over the statement, it is just my observation. I hope the RV AC unit reference will keep it in the GMC content area. It was meant to be related.

Rob,
The two new Dometic Roof A/C units I got from Adventure RV last year were
made in China and unfortunately as you noted the quality ain't there!
The units work fine but the control knobs which are part of the external
unit do not align worth a damn with the inside cover.
