Hey;

A couple of questions. Do we need to pull a vacuum on the AC system
when using Duracool? What physical problems might be expected if you
don't pull a vacuum on a system that has been exposed to air for say a
couple of months? I replaced the dryer on my AC system and managed to
mung up the threads on one of the big lines. Realized it after I had
pumped 4 cans of Duracool into it when I saw oil all over the place.
Removed the new dryer and reinstalled the old one (it had been sitting
out in the weather for about a month), Added 2-1/2 cans of Duracool
and it's cooling like crazy. What are any long term effects or
problems?

Air is a non condensible which means just that it doesn't condense causing higher head pressure. If you are cooling good you are most likely Ok I wouldn't worry as long as you didn't soak up a bunch of that Wa state water in the dryer.

Gary,

The evacuation serves two purposes, One is to remove water/moisture from the system, The other is to remove non-condensiable gasses from the system.

Corrosion in the system can destroy the effectiveness of the compressor in relatively order. Just like the light rust on a cylinder bore.

If it is working well now, then there is not enough moisture in the system to mess things up. Run it until you can replace the dryer. If you replace the dryer while blowing refrigerant through the system (gently) there is no reason to re-evacuate.

The problem is that if the dryer is at its moisture limit, you can have enough in the system to do damage when it is idle. If you replace the dryer (30$ at NAPA) at your next opportunity, the chance of saving the cost of the dryer is pretty good.

Do you have access to a sensitive scale or balance? Keep the plugs from the replacement. Weight the old one then put it in a 250* oven for an hour. Pull it out and weight it again. They can hold about 10 grams of moisture (IIRC). Keep up the process until the weight ceases to decline. Then put the left over plugs in it and put it in your spare parts collection.

Why didn't you do this with that part and put it back in?? ?
Because you would have had to leave the system open too long to do that and that is just never a good idea.

Gary,

If it works don't fix it!

As you lower the pressure on water you lower the boiling point and raise the
freezing point.

If you leave the ice at vacuum it will sublimate; go from a solid state to a
gaseous state without returning to the liquid state.

Bdub,

Here's some info on the PLSS the Apollo Astronauts wore:

http://next.nasa.gov/alsj/plss.html

By the way the painted cutaway was built by a fellow PlSS tech; Max Kandler,
and me. I did most of the cutaway work and Max did the painting, it's candy
apple paint!

Here's a bit more info on it.
