We are looking at moving. The "Boss" wants no stairs. I'd like to not have to back down the street 600' and back into the drive with the GMC. It would be tough for GMC guests. Only have room for one more GMC(guest). Would like to be able to turn the GMC around on the property. Soooooo,,,,have a piece of property in mind with 25 acres. 5 that need to be cut(ouch). We now cut 2 with a 48". Need a tractor. Had a nice 8n and would get another but it won't go slow enough for a rototiller. Was thinking of a MF 35,,,135. Ford 861(800??),1000 or 2000. Or simular. Any thoughts???? Did not grow up on a farm,,,so I gots to do the research,,,,thanks,,,,PL

Around here for 'gentleman farming' I see a lot of Kubota diesels, from the little ones up to the 4WD ones.  The guys who contract mow the highways are pretty much all using John Deere.  Working farms usually have JDs or diesekl Fords.

Paul, You might check out "grey" market tractors. These are tractors originally sold overseas and imported used here. Generally less expensive than used domestic origin. Some of them pretty much are the same as sold here with US makers name on them. I have a Yanmar. John Deere had a deal with Yanmar and used some of their stuff.

Used the Yanmar to move around the GMC's drive train while it was out.

I've got a Diesel MF 135 (~'66) to do the mowing around the place and a
little dirt work now and then. Great little tractor! No complaints at all.
Just would like power steering and a front end loader on it.

When I was a Vocational Instructor for Ore Dept of Corrections, I ran the
Small Engine Shop. We worked on many small utility tractors, John Deere,
Ford, Simplicity, Bolens, MTD, Sears/Roper, Yanmar, etc. The best, far and
away hands down, was the Kubota. We had one 3 cylinder in daily service,
mowing and tilling fruit orchards, many acres, with inmate operators. That
tractor ran for 14 years with no service other than lubrication, belts,
hoses, It finally plugged an injector and the resulting faulty spray pattern
resulted in a burned piston. Upon subsequent teardown, the only damage was
to the piston and liner. Replaced all three, along with all bearings and
rebuilt the cylinder head. Tractor is still in service today. I drive by the
place often as it is near where I live. I retired in 1995, and I still see
it working. Very good hydraulics and a large number of implements. Real
class I, 3 point hitch and drive up, hook up, and go features. They are
extreme duty stuff. A little more $$ up front, but you get what you pay for.
No, I don't own stock in the company. I have 2 John Deere tractors, an old
110 garden tractor with a belly mount 38 " deck mower, and a 317 Utility
with a Tiller and a landscape bucket. Both have Kohler motors. I also have a
Ford that has a 2 cylinder diesel, it is a 1020, has a 48" rear field mower,
a back blade scraper, and a 48" Rotovator tiller. It is 4 wheel drive, has a
5 speed with a high/low transfer box and a live PTO. If you could find one
of thers used, they are also very good.

The John Deerw industrials are hard to beat. Look for a good used 401 or 401B They were used on just about every highway department before they went to the green John Deere farm style tractors. The industrials are lower to the ground and usually have wider flotation tires. Perfect for mowing. I have 2 of them for cutting and baleing hay.

I've gt a JD powered by a 3 cylinder Yammar diesel. It has a front loader, backhoe, post hole digger, trencher, rake, plow, snowplow, dirt box, and brush hog. It will do just about anything you want to do but cut grass. That's because I never bought the mower deck for it. I've never had to do anything to it but change the oil and grease it. Oh yes, and occasionally add some soy bean diesel to it from my neighbor's tank.

No-stairs is a GREAT idea (one reason why we like the GMC). We have a
MF TO-35 (gas with power steering). In Low/Low you can walk next to it
and throw rocks in the trailer. Wish it was diesel, but only cost
$1200 seven years ago. Also have a diesel Kabota 7100 with frontend
loader (never lift an engine or railroad tie anymore), blade for snow,
and a bush-hog for mowing the fields.

Somebody - maybe M-F?  Markets Belarus brand here as well.  Solid iron, no magic at all, and pretty much unbreakable.
