Are the covers on the final drive going from a 3:07 to a 3:55 interchangable? They look the same, I'd like to be sure. The one that came with my new drive is quite beat up, and my old one is perfect. Thanks.

RD, any of the covers that have the same number of bolts are interchangable.
Be sure to get the correct gasket (the one that looks like 2 gaskets stapled
together is the correct one) and has a maze type vent cutout on the inner
one. After the gasket is installed, a drill bit that just fits the hole in
the top of the cover must be used to make a hole in the outer gasket so the
final drive will vent. If you use RTV instead of the correct gasket, the
final drive will leak.

I recently replaced a couple of final drive cover gaskets. In both
cases, the gasket was single piece, NOT the two pieces stapled
together which I'd always used before. There's still a maze, of a
different configuration, to keep oil from escaping but allowing air to
pass. A much more experienced GMC mechanic than I assured me that
it's OK. So far, so good.

By the way, the latest of those was on Stick Miller's coach where we
had so much trouble with ATF leakage. Since repairing the cooler line
leak at the transmission, it's not dripping. Since I'd ordered them
and NAPA found them, I do have the two back-to-back FD pinion seals as
spares. $13+ each!

Ken, the one piece gasket, quite thick, integral vent maze, is the
preferable gasket for the application if you can find it. All that I have
been able to locate lately is the 2 piece one. If you have a part number for
the one piece along with a source, please share it with the net if you
would. Either one works, properly installed. I would still caution against
RTV as it has a tendency to plug up the vent hole which results in pressure
buildup in the final drive and subsequent leaks as you found out.
