The passenger side because of the dog leg design caused by the oil
filter location and mounting.

G'day,

I'm confused!

R.D. asked:

Which of the stock manifolds is hard to come by, Driver or pass side?

J.R. replied:

The passenger side because of the dog leg design caused by the oil filter
location and mounting.

I asked:

IIRC someone mentioned that the exhaust manifolds off a Toronado are not the
same also is that correct?

Dave Silva replied:

That is correct.

I reviewed Junk Yard Gems and noted:

Exhaust Manifolds: Olds 455 Toronado manifolds will fit 455 or 403 right
side only! Left side has donut problem. Inspect for cracks and flatness.
Resurface?

I ASSUME the right side is the passenger side.

I put my memory cells in overdrive and I also seem to remember someone
saying that the Toronado manifolds were not as "beefy" as the GMC manifolds.

New questions:

Regarding the passenger side exhaust manifold:

1) Is the passenger side exhaust manifold from a Toronado exactly the same
as the passenger side exhaust manifold from a GMC?

2) If they are not exactly the same what are the differences?

3) If they are not exactly the same will they still fit?

Regarding the driver's side exhaust manifold:

1) Is the driver's side exhaust manifold from a Toronado exactly the same as
the passenger side exhaust manifold from a GMC?

2) If they are not exactly the same what are the differences?

3) If they are not exactly the same will they still fit?

Rob,

Don't trust these idiots! Ask the old parts man these critical
questions.
The manifolds are the exact same part number in the parts book
for
the Toro and the GMC. Lefts are the same for all motors. Rights
are
different between 455 and 403. The 403 manifold has an upward
dog-leg to avoid the oil filter adapter. Caused by the shorter
deck.
The left side would be more common because of being used on both
the 455 & 403. But they crack more because of the tin shroud for
air cleaner heat which makes them run hotter.

Rob,
I am going to stand somewhat corrected here! I just when out and
looked at the Old Tornado Eng that I have in storage and then went and
look at the manifolds on the 455 in the Avion and they appear to be
the same. That said the passenger side will still be the one most
difficult to find as it available only on the toranado engines and of
course on the GMC engines. Tornados are not that findable in the mens
malls. As listed in the "Junk Yard Gems" it is NOT the same as on the
RWD Olds 455/403 as they use a different oil filter assembly.

Aren't the right side exhaust manifolds the same as on the RWD cars?

Steve,

I have a spare set too and IIRC one of them has the ribs too. As a SWAG I'd
say it was the drivers side.

John,

IIRC they're sitting on the bottom shelf of the pallet racking, when you get
a chance could you take pictures of the side that faces outwards and the
side that faces inwards towards the block. Send the pictures to me and I'll
post them to the Photosite.

You are correct, Rob. The ribs are to give more surface to heat
the air that
is going up to the air cleaner.
