I found in the 'cheepie' bin at Tractor Supply a set of "Light Duty" 10 foot jumper cables. They're light allright, #10 ga wire. Useless for spinning the 455 - or any auto engine. But, they were $2.99. I don't think I can buy 20 feet of good copper #10 wire for 15 cents a foot, and the battery clamps were just icing. And while #10 jumpers are good only to spin off my lawnmower or the genset in the coach, the #10 wire is the perfect size for a pair of ammeters. With heavy scuff proof insulation. Also suitable for powering the distribution fuse block from the fusible link. Life is good.

Johnny,
You might want to try a test as simple as boiling water on the
insulation of those wires. I doubt that the specifications for those
cables made much provision for thermal conditons, abrasion resistance;
or, much of anything else, for that matter.

Yes and the "time" part of the equation will be hard to simulate. I bet the cheep insulation is offgassing and getting harder as we speak.

While the wires might not handle the STARTING load of an engine of any size, they should handle the CHARGING load of most batteries.
After properly and safely connecting let the "good" vehicle run at a little more than a high idle to charge the "bad" battery. Wait a while then you should have enough charge in the "bad" battery to start the motor without pulling to much current through the small jumper cables.
Not ideal.... just works.

Why not carry one GOOD set of cables? I don't see the point in cheap emergency equipment. A really decent set of jumper cables can be had for about $25. And while your at it, make sure that they are long enough to reach from your battery side across the nose of the coach as well as the nose of the jump vehicle in case batteries are in furthest possible location with vehicles parked side by side.

I would be curious to know what that "good copper" really consists of. I do my best to not buy items made by the comrades across the sea since in my opinion they have some very loose ethics.
I got an air hose at Lowe's a few months back and tossed it up on the shelf in the shop for later use. Then every time I went in shop I felt ill until I got rid of it. I thought it said USA but no, it was Chinese and made of who knows what. I had to tie it to the roof of the car to take it back it was so horrible.
There has been talk here about resistors doing funny things lately. I work for a massive telco and other techs and I have seen a rash of failures due to overseas parts doing things that often defy normal electronics laws. But corporate America caused this cheap import junk mess so in a way it's poetic justice.

You miss the point. I >do< carry good cables, I used to drive Diesels which require a much better set than the coach engine, and kept my good ($65) jumpers. These things were bought for the wire in them, it's a bargain.

Actually, I'll run the nonexposed portions through a piece of garden hose. The planned use will have the run out in the open under the hatch for the most paert.

The conductor looks pretty good. The biggest problem we see in our gear (broadcast equipment) is Pregnant Capactor Syndrome, which has been rampant for the last five or seven years. Some chinese chemical company manufactured a lot of electrolyte for capacitors and sold it to just about every manufacturer in the industry. After several years of use, the capacitor puffs up and/or explodes from heat created internally fro the short that develops. And the stuff found its way to this country, even some Sprague components failed from it. You can't go by the manufacturer anymore, their feedstock often is sourced overseas. Blame the shipping companies - when $3K gets a standard container sent anywhere in the world, you can source the cheapest stuff imaginable at a reasonable shipping cost, claim 'Made in USA' and hose the proles. We had the same thing happen to several reputable pet food companies.
