Where does the little folding table go?
Does my Onan not have a power drawer, and just bolt directly to the frame?
How do I get the dash off? I couldn't find any snaps or bolts.
Where are the bolts that will let me change the tension on the
alternator, compressor, etc? I look at it and it's overwhelming.
Got the name and number of a mechanic who lives at the park, and called him up.
Me: "Do you work on RVs?"
Him: "Absolutely."
Me: "Cool. I belong to that green 77 Palm Beach."
Him: "But not that one. Won't touch it."
Great. I might be on my own. I hope y'all can coach me through and
tell me which bolts I need to loosen so that I can change the belts.
I've got a feeling that the Queen doesn't actually need much, just
things hooked back together. New belts and hoses and plugs and oil,
wiring the Onan back up and hooking it up to the cut fuel line (or
more accurately, running new fuel lines).
I need to build those multiton jack stands and get her up off the
ground so that I've got room to work above and below.

Robin,
The belts are shown in the Maintenance manual. To supplement the MM look at this picture and those that follow in the album. It should help you to see the ones you need to access. The bolts that fit in slots are the ones that move in an arc to increase/decrease the tension. All the other bolts may have to be released to allow the alternator, power steering pump or ac compressor to move. Be careful not to use a large pry bar to tension the belts, especially on the power steering pump, as it may result in damage to the unit.

Robin,
Does your '78 Royale have the Power Drawer? You could compare one against the other to see what's up with the Barn Queen. It looks to me like your power drawer is gone. I'd be inclined to seal up the hole nicely to keep noise and gasses from getting into the coach before figuring out a way to mount it.
Your videos are great. I can't wait for the next installment.

Robin,
I reckon the table that is attached to the engine cover is a PO addition and
the one you asked about hooked to a bracket on the dash that's no longer
there.
Your Onan is missing the case and slides, contact one of the Jim's they
probably will have one.
To remove the dash see Maintenance Manual X-7525 and X-7725 Section 12 -
CHASSIS ELECTRICAL shows. Also Parts Book 78Z page 23-32 shows a blow up.
To find the bolts to install / adjust the Alternator see Parts Book 78Z Page
7-15. Since your engine is a 403 it's the illustration on the upper right.
It appears that you have to loosen the bolts designated as Key 15 and 14 to
allow the alternator to pivot.
To find the bolts to install / adjust the Power Steering Pump see Parts Book
78Z Page 16-19. You will have to loosen bolts designated as Key 8 and 3 to
allow the pump to pivot. DO NOT PRY on the tank with anything! You WILL
probably punch a hole in it if you do!
To find the bolts to install / adjust the A/C compressor belts see Parts
Book 78Z Page 26-10. This illustration is a bit tricky so I'm not sure if
I'm 100% correct in what I'm going to note. I'd GUESS that you'll have to
loosen bolts designated as Key 10, 8 (upper one) and 5.
At any rate you have a reference to figger' it out.
If I were you I would study this info a bit and go look at the Barn Queen
again. I reckon you can do this yourself.
Failing that go visit the mechanic and see if he is willing to walk down to
the Barn Queen with you so you can show him what you want done. I'll bet
he'll do the work once he sees what you want done.
Here's a link to Gene's website for the belts:
http://gmcmotorhome.info/BELTS.html
Scroll down until you come to the chart for the 403. By the way I would not
install the belts you found in the Barn Queen, they're 20 years old!
GOOD LUCK!

Rob M.

You remind me of myself over 2 years ago. I bought a Queen as well and had little understanding of the motorhome or what I had gotten into.
After a lot of investigation, study and advise from Jim Bounds, mine is restored and mostly reliable for use.
I have enjoyed the arduous journey and have taken pride in my gained knowledge and accomplishments.
Hang in there and don't forget that the only dumb question is the one you don't ask!!!

I think I'll try the double pulley. Just an FYI, I'd not hang that Onan by the eyebolt for so long, nor run it that way. Yikes.

When one has the double alternator pulley, where does the second belt
go? I don't see much spare space on the crank, timing, power steering
pulleys, and the AC compressor pulley is the wrong size (you'd wind up
with belts going two different speeds).

Robin,
I goes over the alternator, power steering pump, crankshaft, and water pump
pulley.
It does not go over the a/c pulley.

You can see the empty "slot" on the power steering pulley in the photo

When I look at that picture, I don't see any open slots. Crankshaft
has 3 (all utilized), water pump has 3 (also all utilized), power
steering pump has two (both utilized), and the alternator and
compressor have one each. I don't see anywhere else for an alternator
belt to go, so I must be missing something.

Robin,
Note the belt that goes around the crank pulley, water pump pulley, and
power steering pump pulley.
Cut it off.
Run the new belt exactly like the belt that goes around the crank pulley,
water pump pulley, power steering pulley, and alternator pulley.
Make sense now?

Oh, yeah. Duh, I see now. And it has the further benefit of reducing
the number of differently sized belts from 3 to 2... and I bet the
bigger belts are easier to thread over the fanblades than the smaller
belt that services only the power steering pump.
Is it hard to put on the double pulley? I've never pulled a pulley off
off anything before; if it's going to be too much hassle, I'll just
buy a new alternator with a double pulley already on it if it comes to
that.

It's extremely easy to do with the alternator off of the coach. Use an impact wrench and a socket it will be off in 3 seconds. All you have to do is remove the nut from the center of the pulley.
Grab an APC from Gene, you ought to have this on both coaches.

Robin,
No worries, we'll make a grease monkey out of you yet!
The bigger belt is still a PITA to get over the fan.
I don't think you can buy an alternator with the double pulley installed for
the GMC.
If you remove the alternator you can take the pulley nut off in heartbeat
with an impact wrench. Once the nut is off the pulley SHOULD slip right off
it's on a straight shaft.
It is a bit tricky to install the pulley with the alternator in place
especially since you don't have a belt on it now. If you had a belt on it
now you could try and tighten it REALLY tight and hope that the alternator
wouldn't turn while you loosen the nut that holds the pulley on. You could
try to use a strap wrench to hold the alternator cooling fan blades BUT be
careful not to bend them. BTDT!
http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=strap+wrench
I just had another thought about the green table, maybe it attaches to the
bottom of the pedestal table in the middle of the engine cover and folds
down?

Robin,
You Onan is currently IN its "Power Drawer." It has slides inside... if unlatched it should slide. (Two latches and a safety catch.) I would take it apart, install the drawer... THEN install the generator on the slides. But it could be installed in one piece with a transmission style jack.
And yes the drawer just bolts to the frame. In fact when they removed the bolt to the frame they also removed some of the bolts that hold the rear frame clip to the frame rails! ... It might be good idea to replace them sometime! (Even if you put the Onan in the Royale.)
I had alway heard that wasp spray was a good alternative to pepper spray... I didn't know it sprayed as far as you demonstrated. (But, I am not sure how effective the "anti-air fire" was... )

There is no overkill. There is only "Open fire!" and "Reload!"
You know, they make a laser that can acquire, track, identify, and
then BURN OUT OF THE SKY a mosquito, using off the shelf hardware and
some open source software. I would tweak it to detect wasps etc.
Fun fact: Hymenopterae is responsible for more human deaths each year
THAN ANY OTHER ANIMAL. Sharks, bears, snakes, spiders are all less
effective than bees and wasps/related. 90 percent of stings are in
children, but 90 percent of deaths are in adults, many in people with
no history of being allergic. My fear of these things can just about
not be overstated; there are no lenghts I won't go to in order to
escape from or engage and destroy these things.
