Happy 4th of July to all you Freedom loving GMCers out there, and the rest
of you who merely take it for granted. Enjoy the day with family and
friends, and think maybe a little bit about the direction this country of
"WE THE PEOPLE" is headed in. If you like high unemployment, and dependence
on offshore everything, with a strong belief that the government owes you
something, then not much else will be required of you. If you are a little
troubled by the current state of affairs, write your Senators and
Congresspersons (man do I hate that term) and let them know how you feel.
But enjoy this day and all that it stands for, love your family and friends.
Eat some Barbeque & potato salad, throw a few horseshoes, watch some
fireworks or maybe a rodeo or nascar race. Get out there, spread a little
money around, stimulate the economy a little bit and live your life. Don't
just sit on your butt and watch it go by. It will be over before you know
it.

I wrote Congersman Frog the other day regarding a bill I wish he would support.
If I may ramble, I'll tell you how to have the Congersman read your epistle. When I was a kid, Senator Hill came by the house (Daddy was Thuh Judge) wanting to get directions to 'Yarborough's Store' because he wanted to visit a constituent there. So, Dad says 'Come on, we'll run out there." He had a letter from a dirt farmer in the East end of the county complaining about something to do with a Federal program. It was written in pencil, with corrections. On the way, the Senator said essentially 'Young man, here's a lesson in practical politics. This guy walked to the store one afternoon, probably bought the pad and pencil and a stamp and envelope, and wrote this letter. Everyone at that store watched and helped, and every one of them expects him to be answered. And you bet he will be. If it was typed on a letterhead, my secretary would answer it, but this man probably represents a LOT of votes, and he's worth my time.' He was well
received at Yarborough's, spoke to the gent for a bit, pressed the flesh with everyone thare, and stood eveyone to a coke. ALthough in my case, a Teague's ginger ale. Hill was a consummate politician of the old school.

Hill was the politician. Teague Daries used to have a bottling plant upon Tallassee Alabama. Now and again, they would run a batch of ginger ale that was to die for. NOrmally carried by country stores that Coke and Pepsi couldn't deliver to profitably. (in the Southeast, even any soda is a 'coke'. Generic term.

Raised in Columbus, GA, my buddies and I never drank CocaColas -- only
RC's & Nehi Oranges. To start off with, they were 12 oz bottles for
the same nickle as Cokes. And we did have the Moon Pies, too, but
more commonly we poured a bad of Tom's peanuts in the bottle.
Over the headquarters there was a big water tower in the shape of a
Nehi Orange bottle. I think that's gone now.

My wife, whose family came from St Lawrence County
in upstate NY was very fond of Vernor's. My folks liked
Cliquot Club. I don't care for ginger ale at all, probably
because I was forced to drink it when I was sick!

I fell in love with Vernor's in Juneau --the only locally bottled soda in
town, the rest came by ship.

OK. So this has drifted from a statement about Independence Day to our
preferred forms of non-alcoholic beverages.
Well, I was raised in the south - the southern part of Illinois. Even my
county seceded from the Union. So, enjoying RC Cola and Moon Pie was fairly
common. (My dad's family was from Alabama).
However, when we traveled north and east of Columbus, Ohio we always stopped
at a grocery to get some Vernor's. In fact, dad would always bring back tow
six-packs of bottles. He treated it like fine wine. Around here the local
ginger ale is Ale-8.
I had the best of both worlds - Vernor's and RC Cola. And, yes Ken, I
couldn't see paying good money for a 8 oz drink when you could get 12 ounces
for the same price.
Personally, I preferred peanuts with root beer -- purchased at an A&W stand.

It is to Vernor's as Chateau $50 a bottle is to Boone's Farm.
The Chattanooga Baking Company is doing well. R-Cs are getting scarcer, but The Sacrement is still available to those who look.
