Hi Michael,
We live on US-199 (the Redwood Highway) that connects US-101 at Crescent City, CA, with I-5 at Grants Pass and have kids that live in Santa Cruz. We make the northern part of your trip often and have done the southern part a number of times as well. Best route depends on what you are looking for. The Grapevine going north is not bad. Once back down in the flat you can continue on I-5 (fastest) if you need to make time, or go west to the 101 (most scenic) if you want to enjoy the many small towns along the way. If you go on the I-5 you can skirt SF to the east. If you take 101 through Santa Cruz and on north the views are spectacular but you will have the somewhat harrowing drive on 19th through the Avenues part of SF and across the Golden Gate bridge. Roads are a bit narrow and traffic heavy depending on the time of day. Traffic can be heavy all the way to north of Santa Rosa. At that point the traffic becomes far less and the road is very scenic. Take the time to g
o over to the ocean on one of the many loop roads off the 101 and be sure to spend time in the Redwoods (take Avenue of the Giants for a really fun drive). Once you get to Crescent City, CA, make the decision to cross over to the I-5 (fastest) or stay on the Oregon coast (really beautiful). Coastal route will add about 50% to the time but is well worth it if you have the time. You can cross over to the I-5 at several points.
If you take the I-5 from LA to east of SF you will be on a freeway quite removed from much of the population. In No. Cal you will be in beautiful mountain scenery. As you approach the CA/OR border you will climb Siskiyou Pass, the highest point on the I-5 at a bit under 5,000 feet. Not hard but a bit of a grunt depending on how your GMC is geared. Continuing on going north from Grants Pass, OR you will go over five other smaller mountain passes and then on to the relatively flat valley area headed into Portland.
So, choice is up to you. If you have the time and don't mind the traffic in FS, take the coastal route. If you have already done that, or if time is critical take the I-5. If you do decide to take the 101 to Crescent City and then cross over to the I-5 on 199 you will come up the beautiful but narrow and twisty Smith River Canyon. About 22 miles from the CA/OR border you will pass right in front of our building. Stop and say hello if you can.

Living in the o.c. (CAL)near Disneyland and want to take the GMC to Portland area (actually McMinnville, Or. Trying to decide if I should go over the grapevine and up highway 5 through Shasta or if heading over to the coast above Frisco and taking the 101 would be a better way to go?
Any suggestions?

Michael,
I'll be it would be a treat to visit Jerry and Sharon if the shop is anything as nice as their coach. Take a gander at some of the woodwork he's done at the dovetail joint <http://jerrywork.com/> . They have a 78 Royale with the rear "U" shaped lounge that is a marvelous lay-out for a couple. I never knew that floorplan existed 'till I saw Jerry and Sharon's coach.
