Took my coach for a run for the first time this season. I've had someone working on brake line replacement, gas line replacement along with a added electric fuel pump to help with priming the lines for initial starts. He also worked on the Onan and shocks on the coach. I was excited to take it on it's first run, but didn't get very far. I drove about 1/4 mile and the engine just shut down. No sputtering, just shut off. First time for this one. God knows I've had my electrical issues with this coach. Seem like it's rearing it's ugly head again. Any possible ideas on this one??

Thanks Gene,

If this went out would it let me re-start it again? I failed to mention that once it stopped dead, I was able to re-start it again and get it back to the storage area. It just seems to go for about a 1/4 mile and shut down. Sorry for the omission.

When my HEI coil went out it would allow me to start it but wold not allow much load.

However: if you have the Q jet carb with the little filter in front of the carb I would start with the filter. I have had a couple problems with them. I also have a filter in front of the little filter and still have had problems with the little filter. When It first acts up it will shut you down under acceleration but allow it to idle and run if acceleration was very slow. It keep me to under 50 the last time it went out until I got where I could change it. I am getting ready to replace most of my fuel lines since that is were most of my dirt must come from. I had drop my tanks and had them cleaned and the problem still comes up were I have to change out the filters about every 10K miles. The lines to the tank were replaced when the tank was dropped but the long lines in front of the switch looked good and I did not replace them at the time. Should have but did not.

The next time it fails, open the hatch, remove the air cleaner, look down the front barrels of the carb. DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE. Depress the gas pedal 3 times and see if it squirts gas into the barrels. If there is no gas you have a fuel delivery problem. If there is gas then start looking for an electrical problem.

No gas - start by looking at filters. Especially the one in the front of the carb. Just replace it. They are cheap.

Electrical - start by metering the +12 volt lead to the HEI on the cap. Run a ground wire from the base of the distributor to the engine block. It can be a temporary lead with a couple of alligator clips. If that fixes it replace it with a permanent one. After that I'd look at the module and the coil. Replacement with a spare is probably the best approach. Look carefully at the wires around the module while you are in there. Sometimes they break.

Thanks guys, my mechanic called and said he found a loose wire which he has fixed, he also found the ignition module reading weak. So he plans on replaceing the module the rotor and the coil. He wants to make sure that I don't get stranded with this problem. I'm suppose to get a report tommorow after he drives it. Thanks again for the help!!

Update on this problem. The mechanic has replaced the coil, ignition module and rotor, but the engine still cuts off at the same point of the drive (about 1/4 mile from start point). The engine dosn't sputter, it just cuts off. As said before, the battery checks out on charge level and under load of starter, it's a brand new interstate. I and the mechanic are both believing it's electrical because of the abrupt engine cut off.
Would there be anything else that would cause this?

Do you have an electric fuel pump?

I would suggest setting up a multimeter to check voltages
(extended leads to cabin) at various points in the electrical
system. It will CERTAINLY be a PITA, but the sudden stoppage
almost always is electrical in nature.

I had a boat that would do the same thing. Took three summers
to find the cause. Electric fuel pump required a solenoid switch
to handle the current for operation. Everything checked good but
one engine would die, sometimes restart on its own due to the
continuing forced rotation of the propellor. It turned out to
be the little AC/DELCO relay available at NAPA for less than
$18 including tax!

If you have more than one meter available, check several points
simultaneously. It just MIGHT be a bad ground return somewhere.
Check 12V coil input, distributor, fuel pump, etc.

Tom,

Since you had an electric fuel pump installed -- and then this bagan -- I would start by checking out new pump. Where does it get it's power, is it connected to an oil pressure switch to cut it off? Is it in addition to the mechanical pump, are they in-line, is it blocking the fuel flow....

When the engine stops, have you pulled the air cleaner and operated the
throttle to see if there's gas in the bowl to be squirted by the
acceleration pumps? If there is not, hot wire the fuel pump and try again.
If there is gas, then the problem is ignition.

What about the pickup coil? That, or its leads, could cause the symptoms
you've described just as well as the module or HV coil.

DID YOU DO THIS to determine whether your problem is gas or ignition?

Ken,

Yes, that was the first thing he checked when he starting looking at it again for me. We took off the breather and he had me punch the accelerator a couple of times and he showed me the jets squirting fuel into the bowel. So it's getting fuel.
I talked to him last night and he said the electric fuel pump is not working now. He said he will look at that issue today. I will let him know of the grounding issue for the pump today. I suggeted last night that he bypass the electric fuel pump and also put his old battery back in it. Test these one at a time to hopefully isolate those two potential problems. If those two don't correct it, it's onto relay and such. Even though the abrupt shutdown indicates a electrical issue, I still want to make sure it isn't something to do with the new electric fuel pump. It's just a curious thing that the engine shut down is at the same exact spot on his test drive. I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks again for all the good suggestion!!
Tom

Ken,

I believe he has done the first part of this. I've pasted this into a e-mail to him to give him some addtional ideas. I have not heard from him in a few days so I don't know if that means he hasn't had much success or possibly he dosn't want to work on it because of the blazing heat we are experiencing in the mid-west...wouldn't blame him. It get's pretty hot in that thing out in the sun. Keep you posted.
Thanks

Don't know if this will be what caused it yet, but my mechanic said he had found a puncher in one of the gas hose he installed and the new electric fuel pump was not working. He is planning on dropping the fuel tanks again to replace the hose and has a new fuel pump order to replace the new one he installed before.
Not sure of how he got the GMC down to the gas station and back when he took it for it's first test drive after he worked on it, when I could get a 1/4 mile without it dying. Anyhow, the story continues Confused

New update on this. My mechanic called and said he had replaced the new fuel pump with another carter pump he purchased. Even though it suddenly shut down indicating a possible electrical problem, it turned out that the engine under additional acceleration load would not get enough gas. So it was the electric fuel pump that malfunctioned...only after a half and hours work. So now he says he has driven it for 10 miles, putting it through acceleration and everything is running normal.
So I'm back in bussiness.
Thanks to all for the help!!
