A non-computer savey buddy of mine is finishing up a cad 500 coach. The starter is chewing up the flex plate. What kind of starter should he run? An Eldorado? Will the olds starter typically cause a problem?

Thanks a bunch

Neil

Sir: I have no sperience with this issue on an Olds or a Caddy. The starter replacement # is the same on the Olds and the Caddy so they should be the same starter. I have run into a lot of fitment issues with Chevy starters, Some new and rebuilt starters has a new mounting head that would not fit correctly. Sometimes shims would help, but most of the time I`ve had to swap the heads on the starters at the counter of the parts store before giving up my core. The only other time I had a problem with ring gear chewing 1/2 way on the gear turned out to be the flexplate was installed backwards. I believe the Chevy flexplate is offset and the starter bendix was not engaging far enough.

In all probability, he has the flex plate and torque converter mismatched
with the result that the flex plate is out of position with the starter. The
proper torque converter/flexplate combination only has 3 lugs where the
threaded bolts go to the torque converter. If he has a 6 lug converter, it
will warp the flexplate out of line. It is possible to remove the three
offending lugs. First thing I would check.

The Cad and Toro is the same set up.
Youll need to look at the plate and the starter and seee where it is meshing.
We then can finger it out for you.
