I have written an article on owning two GMC motorhomes. I need to type it up and send it to GMCMI for publication. However, I wonder how many of us own two or more GMC motorhomes?

I think many do and this is unique in the RV industry.

Why do you own two GMCs? One of my friends has 5!!
Another has a GMC on each of two continents!!!! Right Rob?
Another has a GMC in one state and an Airstream in another. Right Fred?

I own two.A guy sold his barn and told me if I could drag the
wheel-less non-running coach out of the barn, I could have it for 500
dollars. At that price, I had to get it.

I guess I could claim two, since I'm the last one to buy the one my
son now has. :-)

The reason I bought the 2nd one was because I wanted the drive train
from it for my first one.

Michael;
I own 2 GMC's. A 23' that I've had for 28 years and a 26' that I bought from
a lady getting a divorce (price was right) and I like the extra 3' of room.
I've had it for 5 years and it is in the restoration process as we speak.
That's the reason I have 2.

Michael,

As most people know already I have three Avions, however, one doesn't count
as it's slowly turning into spare parts.

The reason I have two is kinda obvious, with all the projects on both of
them I didn't want to try and make one seaworthy or capable of flight! ;-)

I don't know how many of you have ever taken notice of the TZE numbers
below, if you do you'll notice that there is one serial number between them.
Dave Greenberg noticed it when he entered them both into the registry. He
also told me that 427 was a er - Damn I can't remember - CRS strikes again!
That means they came off the production line in Benton Harbor one after the
other. At any rate I wonder what the odds are on one guy owning these two
Avions thirty years after manufacture and on opposite sides of the world!

Looking forward to reading your article.

... I wonder how many of us own two or more GMC motorhomes? ...

When the market dropped a couple of years ago, I got to thinking... for the price of the parts my 1973 needed, I could buy a "new" coach that did not need all these parts. I looked all over the west coast an bought a 1978 Rear Bath Birchaven (23 foot, all Birch's are 23 foot...) The plan was (an kind of still is...) to sell the '73 when the "market recovers," making the total cost of "the upgrade" fairly low.

After using the rear bath for a season, we figured out while we REALLY like the shorter coach, we did NOT like the rear bath layout. Also, I was thinking... (dangerous) These coaches have been in use for over 30 years. So... if a coach was completely rebuilt and reconditioned, I should still be able to use it in 30 years. (I'll only be in my 80's.) So, I started a search for a 23 foot side bath core coach.

I found one.... a 1977 Side bath Birchaven. For personal reasons, I can not start the tear down for about a year... so it is sitting while I think about the whole project. I also need to get the '78 ready for a major trip and then for use during the rebuild of the '77. Once the '77 is "done," I will sell the '78 to help pay off the bills.

We are not very good at naming coaches and wife couldn't understand when I would say "the '73" or "the '77." So they are now "One", "Two" and "Three". In the order we bought them.

So, why do I have three? .... Because it always seem it takes me three times to get it right. Rolling Eyes

We recently went to our first GMC rally. I jokingly remarked to my wife
that I really didn't fit in. She was shocked since we had such a great
time and asked me why I felt that way.

I told her, "Well, I'm not retired and I have only one GMC!"

Hi Michael

I have only one - seems to be quite enough to consume all my spare time and money Smile

However, a neighbour of mine owns 4: As I understand, he uses two of them for normal vacation use, 1 for parts and the 1 for a future restoration project. All are housed in a barn nearby.

He has a part time mechanic to maintain them and he has added some cool features.... for example, one that I saw has paddle shifters installed.

Cheers, Wayne

Dan hit the nail on the head. A GMC is akin to having a second wife, we spend lots of money trying to fix and solve all her problems. We never spend enough time fixing her up so she breaks again. At least she (I mean the GMC) doesn"t talk back and rewards us when we do good. I figure you have to be a little bit crazy to own a GMC, so if you have two you must be double crazy.. Smile
