G'day,

I have noticed there have been a few messages on the GMCnet discussing the
replacement of the clutch and seal in the A-6 compressor of late. I went to
the MM and found that the procedure is quite detailed but the tools are all
referenced by J-XXXX and while pictured they are not fully described (the
snap ring pliers numbers ARE provided - #21 & #26). Since I have never
rebuilt one of these I don't have the tools and obtaining them would satisfy
my tool junkie cravings for a day or so! ;-)

Since obtaining the J-XXXX tools referenced in the MM from Kent Moore would
more than likely be more than my tool junkie habit can afford it would be
nice to have some descriptions / pictures / sources of the tools.

Regards,
Rob M.

This might help to start -- an album showing the tools, part numbers and prices as of fall 2010. At least the tools needed to change the clutch!

Rob,
I haven't done a lot of this, but there are a few e-bay sellers sell used Kent Moore Tools pretty cheaply. It helps to have the J # as not all the sellers know the application. Seems like there has been a lot of tools out there lately, I think partially due to the dealer closings from the financial crisis. Most of the tools are newer than GMC m/h vintage, but wouldn't hurt to search the ones your looking for.

Craig,

Yup!

I found two J-22222 - Upper and Lower Control Arm Bushing replacing tool
kits on eBay, one went to Steve Ferguson as partial payment for a set of his
beefed up lower control arms and the second is here in Australia. It will be
heading up to the Gold Coast shortly when Mark decides he wants to replace
his bushings!

The clutch R&R tools are no problem. All of the local chain parts
places had them in their rental program. I borrowed O'Rileys 3 times
during my escapade. The kit does not include the clutch holding
device, needed when installing the puller, but a LARGE pair of water
pump pliers serve as well.

The problems are the LONG nosed C-clip pliers and, especially, the
seal remover/installer. And it should not be a problem if one plans
ahead. All of the big internet tool suppliers have them listed.
Usually for only $10 or so. But the one I chose gave me a 4-6 week
back order from the manufacturer.

Shipping cost is a different matter. :-(

Ken,

The Memphis Autozone store rental/loan progam did not include the tool required to re-install the A6 clutch.

Some rental/loan tools for older vehicles are being removed from the program at Autozone and other stores. For example, Autozone no longer has a timing light -- newer cars don't use them.
That is why I am considering buying a few more of the specialty types -- that and the convenience of having them on-hand. Gathering the right tools can often take far longer than the actual job.

In my case FINDING the tools that I already own takes longer.... someday I'll have a shop to put them in.

I bet it doesn't help me find anything. Rolling Eyes

Mike,
First I have to remember that I own them -- then remember where I stored them. Recently found the reinstall tool in my home office (brought it in to get the part number for someone) Smile

When I did the R&R on my A6 clutch, I went from Autozone to Autozone to find the right tools -- they don't all keep them in stock. Took one home only to have to return it because it was damaged -- so borrowing tools can be very frustrating.
