If they can manage 190# EACH.

Isn't there a roof beam (doorway header) sturdy enough to attach a
come-a-long to?

You'll have to be more than reasonably healthy imho.

I've done engine blocks and such with a friend or two in to pickups by bringing along a couple of decent 2x8 or 2x10 planks and a rope. It's a whole lot easier to ramp that much weight a little at a time than it is to lift and place in one shot. A couple of blocks mid point or so on the ramp and you're laughing. A come-a-long or winch would be a real bonus.

Don't demo your back for it Robin - speaking from experience, it's not worth it.

Best,

Gord

I found that an engine hoist is the easiest way to lift and move it. Ramps along with a good roller cart could work, but the engine hoist is the way to go IMHO.

Not if they want to stay "reasonably healthy." Twisted Evil

As someone else has mentioned.... 400lbs is a bit much to just "lift."

Best way:

There is a threaded hole in the top (intake manifold??) that will take an eye bolt. (I do not know the size eye bolt.) That, and a come-along (or some other type of winch) and the door frame or rafter.

The way I have done it:

I moved my 6k around on rather light weight hand truck. (It has two caster wheels near the handle... making it a four wheel cart.) I blocked it and strapped it down. I even tested it when strapped to this cart.... even set one of the wooden blocks on fire! (to close to the down pipe.)

Not the easiest way, but works:

I have used for other heavy items... You can lift one side (tilt it) and slip a 2x4 under that side. Then lift the other side, putting a 2x4 under that side. Go to one side between the two blocked sides and lift it for a 2x4 on top of the first two 2x4's. Then lift the last side for a 4th 2x4. It should now be 4 inches off the ground.... how many inches do you need? Keep going around.....

OBTW: The Onan is VERY hard to balance on a jack... if it falls off it can damage anything or anyone in its path. (BTDT)

Jacking from under the Onan is NOT recommended.

Robin, From the pix, I can see that it is setting on a wheeled cart of some
kind. If you have access to a number of 4 x 4 or larger blocking material,
use the lever and fulcrum method to raise the thing one end at a time and
safely place progressively higher and higher amounts of blocking under the
cart until it is tailgate high. They built the big triangle things in egypt
this way. My first choice would be to use an engine lifting crane(think
rental) and use that, as my mom used to say, poor people have poor ways.

I just saw this in the Onan Operators and Parts manual on page 7 of the pdf, page 5 of the manual.

<http://www.bdub.net/manuals/Onan/Onan6kwNH_Operator-Parts.pdf>

They show that a 3/8" - 16 UNC Eyebolt is recommended to screw into the top of the Onan as a lifting eye.

At 400lbs if someone slips then all 400lbs end up on one guy. Not a happy thing. It would be just like dancing with my cousin...

I would rent a cherry picker and lay down some planks or plywood, or whatever you have that would help roll the cherry picker over to the pickup truck. Or lift the beast and back up the pickup under the Onan.

Good luck, and be careful!

Ok, I've read the manual. Where on the Onan is the place to screw that
eyebolt into?

Harbor Freight sells a charry picker for about $200. Renting one is
going to cost me about half that in fees and hassle, and I'm going to
need one to install the thing more than likely. May as well buy one,
right? Anybody finding themselves using their cherry pickers more than
they thought they would?

I bought one at an auction a few years ago. It folds up and lives in the corner of my garage. Only used it a couple of times but when you need to use it it's a godsend. Yes it would be helpful installing the onan. Did you try craiglist for one?
On the other hand 2 guys pushing it into a low pickup on ramps would work or as Jim instructed a little at a time. When I was a lot younger I would have gotten a friend to help lift it in. Me and a 15 year younger guy lifted a 4 kw onan in and out of an SOB 2 years ago twice! (I'm a little past 70)it probably weighed around 250 Lbs. Some times we don't get smarter as we get older.

I'd also recommend getting a cherry picker. I have a Harbor Freight one that has been great to have around when you need it. They do go on sale from time to time, so the cost is not all that great, and they do fold up into a reasonable size.

The eyebolt in the manifold does hold it properly, but I would not want to get underneath it when it's up in the air, it is scary to see that much hanging by that small bolt!

I wish you were closer to me. I have a motorcycle lift that would make it easy once you got the Onan on it. It has a large rubber-covered lifting area & is rated for 1000 lbs. I've had 800 on it & rolled it around on concrete with no problems. It even has eyes to hook straps to in order to tie it down. Maybe you know someone closer who has one.
