Pulled the air cleaner to clean the filter and found a pile of acorns left by a winter visiter. Couldn't see the mess with the air cleaner on. This could have caused an unwanted fire. Something to add to my spring list. "Check under air cleaner"

Them critters are not only long lonely winter visitors. They can build a
nest of very flammable stuff in the short span of a Rally. Had some kind of
a critter do it to me at Western States in Auburn Ca. Good thing I did my
walk around which includes a hatch lift and carb inspection. Sucker had
quite a collection there. Never saw him. That stuff should go on the fire
prevention list too. Burn a coach for sure.

It probably was not exactly the cause but I have seen 2 coaches burn to the lug
nuts from critters chewing a fuel line, the hulls are evidence that Murphy's pet
has been there.  Look around for problems caused by the animal that left those
hulls,

Jim,

I'm putting together a treatise on GMC Fires and have noted to check for
nests on top of the engine and chewed wires, where were the fuel lines so I
can note that they should be checked.

A bit off the subject, but once I had a Mercedes Diesel that I stored outside for a winter. When I went to start it in the spring it ran very poorly. I pressed on the accelerator hard and black nuts started shooting from the exhaust pipe. Hundreds of them, honest. The yard was covered with black sooty nuts put in the exhaust system by the critters.

Once the nuts got blown out, the diesel ran just fine.

The guy was a "hot rodder" and had a rubber hose up to the carb.  That's where I
think the problem came from.  I think in your report you should list not only to
not have a rubber hose there but as preventive maintenance, replace the original
steel line.  Have had it fracture and had the same result.  Fracturing of the
metal when bending it so far i think is a problem after this many years.

Jim,

That's what I thought!

The list currently notes:

No rubber lines between mechanical fuel pump and carb inlet

I will amend it to read:

No rubber lines between mechanical fuel pump and carb inlet; inspect hard
line for signs of fatigue. Install insulated braided stainless steel line
available from JimB or JimK.

I've got the "Jim's" fuel line. Nice heat shield on that one. My dad was out hunting a few years back and in just one weekend, the critters chewed the plug wires in his Nissan Xterra. He started home without realizing it, truck ran like crap, and it finally gave up the ghost after pulling the long hill on AZ SR 87 between Payson and Phoenix (Now three lanes wide so you can get by the pokies trying to get by the trucks!!!). Long story short, all that unburned gas from running on only half the cylinders choked his catalytic converter and killed it. That was not cheap.
