Another thing to consider is what happened to me when I owned a 75 Chevy PU with HEI. It was doing the same thing. I thought it may have been vapor lock, but it turned out that the PO had installed a new module in the distributor without putting heat grease under it. Eventually it failed completely.I learned that when replacing the module be sure to spray some carb cleaner on a rag & clean the mounting surfaces thoroughly, including the bottom of the module, then put heat grease on the module & install

Next time you have a similar problem, check to make sure that you have
spark. HEI modules are known to give a similar warning before they go toes
up. Pull the air cleaner top and look at the carb and verify that you have
fuel, and that it is not boiling merrily away in your carb. If that is the
situation, pull the intake manifold and block the exhaust crossover if you
haven't already done so. An electric fuel pump in line with a bypass routed
around it with a check valve will help also. This crappy gas is not going
away anytime soon. It is up to us to become creative and look for solutions
that actually work 100 percent of the time, if we want to enjoy our GMCs in
the future.

I have also seen coils do the same thing. Fail hot and run cold or cooler.
