I understand the conversion is quite expensive. I am told that if you jump
through the right hoops you can avoid some of the import duties. There are
already several down under you could get advice on how to do the conversion.

Others have done the trip, but were well prepared.
You can not hop in a used GMC and put on 3,000 miles or more.
|
I agree this is a risky move... but I remember a couple from the UK flew into Seattle picked up a used 1975 26 foot Avion, and proceed to tour the US. They did not even have any tools screw with them until given a little screw driver at a SOOR rally. It seemed to work out for them... But I expect they where lucky.
Tom,
The first time I read the subject I was thinking "twin beds"... but that isn't what you wrote. Sounds like you are wanting a "normal" layout with the couch removed and barrel chairs installed. I am wondering about how "firm" this is and why.
My thoughts:
I understand you are planning on shipping the coach to a right hand drive country. Are you going to have to move the door to the other side? The reason I ask, is that would make you pull out and rearrange a lot of the interior. You could then install what ever furniture you desire -- at that time.
With your planned trip, the cost of shipping a coach that far, plus the work required to make the coach legal when you get there, I would suggest a focus on "great" mechanical condition, "OK" external condition and "usable" interior. (Side bath, but "exact" layout would be secondary.)
Why?
Shipping a mechanical basket case would be false economy, buying a super nice interior just to remove it, would be a waste of money. Same with the exterior.
The type of wheels you want would depend on the laws where you plan on keeping the coach when everything is done. (Pete might have something to say about this... ) During the tour. you might want to gather the parts you need for the right hand drive conversion so you can ship them with the coach.
Good luck and welcome aboard!

Tom...I have a 76, 29.5", full body off retro fit coach built in Texas.
My wife flew into Dallas Texas and on to Abaline, then drove her 5500 kilometers back to Kelowna British Columbia, Canada.
The coach drove very well, largley without problems, however we did some upgrades which only improved an already great coach.
I will miss the seprate shower and all the extra storage, but it seems that both my wife and I are emotionaly invested in our completly rebuilt 78.
This coach has a lengthy list of upgrades and will sell at about the $30 000. Canadian level. Not necessarily cheep, but having owned and built my own coach, I can say with confedince that you get what you pay for.
This IS a drive away coach that I have no doubt would drive to Alaska and south to what ever port you chose.

John, Rob, Peter, David, Mike, and Dan
I very much appreciate each of you getting back to me!
I have been having some internet problems, hence my slow response.
I'll get back to each of you.
Some comments; I imported an Itasca downunder back in '81, without
conversion
(into Victoria).. I do see mechanical condition as key. I dont have a lot to
spend
and am not sure if I will go via Europe.
It will be a magnificent adventure none-the-less.

Tom,
IIRC this was Linwood Arthur's coach. Here's a link to show how it was
built. He did a great job on it.
http://www.gmcclassics.com/tech/larthur/lauther-rebuild.pdf
There is one thing that Dan will have to do for you. Australian Design Rules
require that the maximum overhang is 60% of the wheel base.
Here's the ADR definition of wheel base and overhang on a tandem rear
wheeled GMC:
Wheel base is the distance from the center of the front wheel to the center
of the two rear wheels.
Overhang is the distance from the center of the two rear wheels to the
rearmost part of the GMC.
To pass a normal GMC you have to remove the rear bumper and spare tire and
carrier. This results in the tail lights being the rearmost item. Once you
pass inspection you can put the rear bumper and spare tire back on.
Also if you do decide to import a "stretched" GMC do not let on that it is
has been modified in any way. If the authorities get wind that it is not as
manufactured by GMC you could / would be up for a lot of problems. If there
is evidence of the frame being modified to elongate it (fish plates) you
could run into problems.
Dan,
I'm not trying to mess up a possible sale but I'm sure you wouldn't want to
sell Tom a GMC he couldn't register in Australia.

Rob M.

Tom,
I was talking to Mark Bennett who has a GMC up on the Gold Coast and he
noted that the rules regarding importing vehicles have changed so you need
to double check what you need to do to get it in and get it registered.
