My Alcoa wheels have been balanced with weights placed on the inside and outside...Is there a problem apart the esthetic?

No problem on a polished wheel without caps. If you use ful wheel caps on a steel wheel, like the originals, the outer weights >can< hold the cap from seating firmly to the rim.
I was always taught to split the weight from side to side, I don't know if that's still the way to go or not.

IMHO nope!
There are two different types of imbalance; Force and Couple.
Force imbalance is perpendicular to the axle.
Couple imbalance is parallel to the axle.
Force imbalance is up and down.
Couple imbalance is left and right.
Putting weights on the inside and the outside corrects both.

True, but given all that the GMC wheels have enough "depth" to be able to balance them in all planes without having to resort to weights on the outer rim--that's assuming Alcoa forged units. This probably will not be true for Eagles.
