Good afternoon,

Well, I am going to be changing my isolation pads this weekend (I hope) and have an issue, of course.

I have sent a message to the Curtis' but haven't heard back yet, so I thought I would ask this robust body of knowledge.

I received the following pads from Bill and Fay:
18 - 3/4" x 3" x 6"
2 - 5/8" x 3" x 6"
2 - 3/8" x 3" x 6"
and
3 - 3/8" x 2" x 4"

First, I am concerned that I received 3 of one size. Since the pads are mirrored left and right, I have either received one too many, or I am one short.

Second, the instructions say: "1/2 pads stack on full pad back by rear wheels inboard of main frame rail to compensate for frame step down". Well, I don't have any 1/2" pads so I am not sure what to make of this note out of the pads I received.

This is on a '76 Royale.

Any clarifications would be appreciated!

Bob

You should call them. I have not been able to get in touch with them for a year via internet. Like Gene says, call later in the afternoon, the later the better. They will be glad to help you figure them out.

I'll be interested to see what you find out, I ordered a set of pads and that's
on my TO DO list. I'll have to check to see what's in the box.

Some thoughts...

Get under the coach the day before and locate and spray
the bolts to be removed/loosened with Kroil (much better
than Liquid Wrench)

This is important.

Also, plan on taking a long time to finish this job. Seems simple
but took us HOURS!

I did mine last summer and can second the thoughts of it not being an easy job. It is not a complicated job, just long and frustrating. Soaking the bolts helps, but I ended up having to cut off and replace mine they were so corroded. I had my interior torn out so had access on the top, but not a fun job.
There is a suggestion of cutting a a slot on the end of the bolts to allow using a flathead screwdriver to help with removing the nut. A good idea, and it does help!

I don't think I took any measurements from my isolation pad kit before I installed it, but the two sides are NOT completely identical. There are differences where the Onan is concerned on the driver side and so the placement and number of the pads is different in that area.

There is also a difference between early and later coaches, but the kit they sent should have accounted for that.

Bob,

The bolts securing the isolator pad brackets are carriage bolts and
are dependent upon seating in the plywood floor for rotation
prevention. The application of penetrating oil and perhaps slotting
the ends of the bolts are good ideas. If there's enough thread
exposed, a threading die run over the threads can help also. But most
effective for me was using a bottle jack under the adjacent aluminum
floor joists. By lifting there and essentially hanging the frame from
those carriage bolts, they were prevented from turning.

As clean as your chassis is, I doubt you'll have much trouble with the bolts.

If the pads are stuck in place, as mine were, a flat wrecking bar
(nail puller) 12" or so long may help you dislodge them. The curved
end will reach where you need to reach better than a screwdriver or
putty knife.

Liquid Nails applied to the new pads has kept mine from slipping out
of place for a couple of years now.

Everyone riding in the coach will appreciate your silencing all the
squeaks & rattles. :-)

I favor Blast!  Available at any parts house, I have better luck with it than Kroll even.  But I echo Richard - spray it yesterday and again this morning and about lunchtime they'll loosen up.

I suspect that by 1/2 pads they mean 1/2 the thickness. Does a 3/4"
and a 3/8" pad fit in there?

Start spraying a month ahead. Do it once a week.

Since you have a Royale prepare to say some secular and profane words four
letters in length. Of course, if you don't have a rear bath model you may
not use such colorful language.

Ken's suggestion is worth a lot. Push up on the body and let the frame hang.
Sometimes it works. Slotting the end of the bolts somehow will allow you to
hold the bolt still.

Some of my bolts had to be blasted out. Use no more than one stick, however.
Replacing them was a problem, especially over the raised dinette.

Above all, get creative.

When done, you'll be glad it's over because things will be quieter and the
ride better as a result.

According to some, pads are doubled between the frame and body near the rear
wheels. When doing my coach there seemed to be no difference in the gap.

By the way, some say to loosen the four corners. Some get away without
loosening the four corners.

Some hints for you.

1. You do not need to replace the four 3/8" pads on the hold downs. There is no weight on them and they do not get squished over time like all of the others. This then means that you also do not need to remove the hold down brackets.

2. You may not need to loosen up the vertical hold down bolts at all. If you coach came with 3/4" isolators originally then you can just jack up on the body and get enough space in there to replace the isolators without undoing the bolts.

3. If you had the thinner pads originally then you can remove the one horizontal bolt one each bracket that attaches the hold down bracket to the frame. REMOVE ONLY ONE BOLT on each bracket and only loosen up the second bolt. This will give you enough room to jack up the body and replace the old thinner isolator with a new thicker one. Then take a drift long rod) and stick it through the hole that is missing the bolt. Pry the bracket back into position. Tighten the loose bolt that you never removed from the first hole. The bracket will now stay in position. You can now remove the long rod and replace the bolt in the second hole.

Most of the isolators can be replaced WITHOUT ever loosening the hold downs.

Be very careful when jacking up the body. Only go high enough to slide out the old and replace the new. If you go too high you can break the black tank as it is mounted to the body while the drain tube is mounted to or through the frame.

If you have a Ragusa step REMOVE IT before installing the isolators. It also is mounted to both the body and the frame.

When reinstalling the step, rubber cushion the two bolts mounted to the frame. This can be done with rubber washers, or rubber grommets, or even the 3/8" pieces left over from your kit. I usually also cut rubber pieces to go between the step and the body. It is OK to enlarge the frame holes so some movement can occur. The frame bolts hole no weight and only keep the step from falling off. All of the weight is supported by the two bolts that go through the body. The body bolts do need to be tight while the frame bolts can be looser and held in place with steel nut with the built in nylon locks. You will see what I mean when you get under there and look at it.

When I ordered my set for our 78, they said that they only sell the thick pads
now for all model years. That should make my job even more fun....NOT !

Thanks for all the information.

I expect to start this this weekend. I hope to finish this weekend as well!

My big concern was the odd number of the 2x4 pads. I will examine them as I go and if one looks better than the others, I may just leave it in.

Let me know how it goes Bob, if I hear cussing echo'ing off of the atmosphere,
I'll know how you're doing.
