G'day,

Avions have galvanized sheet metal compartments for the Onan.

I have insulated it on the coach side using a four layer product: 1/8" foam
rubber - 1/8" high density vinyl - 1/2" foam - silver Mylar.

I would like to insulate the Onan side and did a Google search and found
TONS of insulation that "could" be used.

If you have insulated the Onan compartment what did you use?

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob, My onan compartment is a 1/2 " Plywood box that is covered on the Gen
set side with 24 ga galvanized sheet metal. It was deteriorated due to PO
not treating water leaks. When I rebuilt the plywood box, I sealed the box
to the body with great stuff expansion foam sealant, and used some left over
dynamat that I had. I overlaid that with petproof foam carpet backing left
over from when I did the area of the coach under the front seats. The noise
reduction is very good. If the roof air is on you can't hear the gen set
when you are up front. If you are in the rear it can still be heard. I don't
know the Db reduction.

Rob,,,,with the problems that others have had with poor or bad fuel lines, and FIRE. I wouldn,t put anything in the engine compartment or the gen box that can burn! HWID,,,,,I purchased from a company in CA 1/2 inch thick ceramic insulation. 24 wide.(50 feet long) The guy that owns the company has a GMC!! So,,,I cut it down to about 21-22 wide and wrapped it(encapsulated) with .005(5 thousands) aluminum foil. Its almost like thin sheet metal. Reflects well,,, and isulates. As for sound,,,we can now carry on a conversation and you only here the 509 when its a steep hill. Rolled around on a stool and used wood and sheet metal screws before the install. In an effert to keep down ANYTHING that would contribute fuel I ran metal vacume lines. Thats,,,,brake, cruise, trans, etc,,,. I used 3 tyraps total. Ran conduit from the rear to the front of the motor compartment and from the right to left side in front of the rad and ran my wires in those. But remember,,,,I bend pipe for a livin. I wanted to show you at Duq, but you missed it!!!! Ask some of the guys that looked when I had the engine cover and wheel/inerfender off how it looked,,,,,PL

Did a general search for "ceramic engine compartment insulation' and the first one up was http://www.engineheatprotection.com/ or EHP. I think I had to ask for a certan size not listed on the website. he also sent me some small samples of "hard' and "wet' ceramic. The wet is used to form around headers/ex manifolds or other odd shapes. The .005 foil was craft foil from a hobby supplier. 50' by 24" (don't know what that is in meters, my mind won't think in down under)GL,,,,,PL
