If for nothing else, its condition is just phenomenal and the auction presentation... maybe even better. Most impressive.

Gord,

I think these are very interesting -- would love to inspect one someday.

The seller on this one is curious -- three feedbacks, for purchases totalling 63 cents.... now has four vehicle/boat for sale.

Very nice, thanks for sharing this. I think the seller could have reduced the number of photos by 90% and still have presented it well. Just overkill to have that many. Will be interesting to see the selling price.

Bummer!
It was at $3800 when I saw it - maybe he got an offer he couldn't refuse. We'll see if it'll return.

It has been pulled, but there is a very nice one that shows up at the Tin Can Tourist gathering every spring. It is interesting that it tips a scale at 4200#, is powered by a Corvair driveline, but it still only has a top speed of 65. Even as nice as that one is, my 23 seem palatial.

Matt,

One showed up at the Greater Midwest Classics Rally in Duluth. I reckon just
about every GMCer there went to look at it.

Very interesting. I have never seen a Chevy pass car or truck engine vented
like that. That RH valve cover must be a boat application. The intake is
pre-64 with a blocked off breather pipe. The heads are late model with
accessory bolt holes yet the rams horn exhaust manifolds have the 1964
alternator mount. The carb is not correct by a long shot. It is a newer
smogger carb. Plenty of cobbleing on the power plant and I'd love to see
the V drive.
Nice little piece though.

Good observation Steve. It also looks like the Stewart Warner speedometer is from a different generation of gages.

I wonder if the stuff isn't either 'one-offed' for the van, or is a conglomeration of marine components.  If it's in the back, running through the vee drive, wouldn't it need reverse rotation?  Chris - Craft had available reverse camshafts for counter - rotating installations, same as was used when you stuffed a smallblock into a Corvair.  And it might fit a later smog spec Rochester, or might have been replaced to one.  Thje marine cam was a very mild grind, which made sense when feeding the Corvair transaxle, and probably the vee drive as well.  Boat drivelines don't see the sort of shock loading an automotive app does.

The ID plate shows the engine code for the original engine (don't know why, they just did it that way - this was before VIN codes were federally mandated). V0729TAJ translates as:
V = Flint Michigan Engine Plant
0729 = Engine build date = July 29
TAJ = 1970 - 307 cubic inch - 200 hp - 2 barrel carb - Powerglide transmission
(I think this means it was a 1970 model year engine which was built in July 1969?)

These coaches were originally set up with a standard rotation car engine. Perhaps the V-Drive reversed the rotation?

The setup had cooling problems since the standard fan pulled air from the back of the coach and exhausted it below the vehicle. Some owners replaced the std fan with a reverse rotation one, but it is certainly possible that other changes were made. For instance, the charity that is selling the coach found a cracked exhaust manifold which they had to replace.

G'day,

I just thought of something, this would make an ideal towd for JimK!

It weighs damn close to what the van he normally tows to rallys behind his turbo Caddy powered GMC.

When the Caddy craps out, he can call his tow service and have them come get it, un-hitch the Ultra Van and proceed on his way to the rally!

Twisted Evil
