G'day,

One of my Mates here has a yacht and has installed one of these:

http://www.hitekmarine.com.au/powerpulse.html

He notes that it seems to have "improved" the batteries.

I looked at the brochure and thought it might be something "we" would be
interested in.

Since I am "electrically challenged" would appreciate it if those of you who
are electrical whiz "kids" to check it out and comment.

Regards,
Rob M.

If I recall, this type of system sends brief pulses of
voltage that are higher than normal charging voltages
to the battery. I believe it is said to give a greater
life to a battery because it eliminates (or at least
greatly reduces) sulfation on the plates. Since the
pulses of "over-voltage" are extremely short, no damage
is done to the battery.

It is a de-sulfator. You can build your own:

http://www.instructables.com/id/Desulfator-for-12V-Car-Batteries-in-an-Altoids-Ti/

or buy that one, US price $50 or so. Yes they work.

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think that
the "Battery Tender" does the same thing.

I have a Battery Tender, several years old, that does not have de-sulfation. A web search shows that the current unit "Battery Tender Plus" does not claim to offer de-sulfation. The "Battery Minder", a different company, standard unit does do de-sulfation. I have one the "Battery Minders" also and it has brought batteries back from the dead.

Maybe one of the gentlemen here that work with HAM radios can build one out of their parts bins & test it out. If it works, it could turn into a way to make a few dollars for whoever builds them. I think it's already a feature of my Shumacher battery charger, but others, especially the Solar guys, might find it useful.
