Some years ago when I had a SOB with a 6000 watt Onan (not a powerdrawer, like on the GMC) I purchased an electronic ignition for it from Camping World. For a number of reasons It was never installed and the rig is long gone now. Price was around $100 as I recall

I found it in the basement today. I believe it is a genuine Onan part, but the instructions do not have any brand on them at all, only that it is a Kit 160-1376 and the other number on the paper is C385a. It replaces the points on the Onan, but again, I am not sure what models or if it will fit the Power Drawer. I have the module and the instruction sheets. The sheets show how to time the original ignition points and then replace that point unit with this electronic module.

If anyone would like it to experiment with I would get it to you for $5 in postage as the only cost. Please don't ask for it if you have no idea of what to do with it. I would like it to go to a good home, and had some real use, or someone who was an avid experimenter and would like to tinker with it. Again, brand new, never installed.

As I was writing this post I did a Google search of the part number and found this article by Chuck Aulgur at a GMC rally in 1999, so it may fit the power drawer too.

First reasonable email request will get it. profmail at wildblue dot net.

It has been spoken for now, and will go to a very good home of one of the most helpful GMC people on the net. I am happy for that.

Rob,

If that's the P/N in Chuck's article, it will work on the power
drawer. I found a good deal on one in Tacoma in 2000 and installed
it. It was an improvement over the points, but not nearly as much of
one as the Lawrence Gaskins method we now use. The problem with that
setup (also build by Pertronix, according to their tech) is that it's
operated by the same vertical plunger as the points -- the source of
the erratic timing problem.

If someone does want to install it, and doesn't have the later model
point setup suggested by Chuck, it can be mounted in another way:
Reverse its intended orientation about the plunger, then mark, drill,
and tap 2 new mounting holes in the block. Really quite easy.

That one failed after a couple of years, forcing me into the fortunate
need to follow Lawrence's lead -- he'd just published the method.

Yes, that will fit the Onan used in the GMC. I installed mine in early 1997 and Gene Fisher requested me to write something for his website.
It can be seen here http://gmcmotorhome.info/generator.html#elect

We had that kit that Chuck A. created, but Onan discontinued the unit
so were now coming up with the unit like the one Ken Henderson did.
