Well now I know why paint jobs cost so much money. There is an awful lot of labor to make these coaches look good again. After many years of restoring all the mechanical issues it was time for some paint. All this painting stuff was new to me but after lots of internet research and about a grand worth of supplies I shot it in the driveway. I thought it would be one of those 10,20 jobs as I had never sprayed acrylic urethane before. By the third coat I began to feel good about what it was looking like. Other than some dirt fights with the wind it looks good close up. People stare at it now as I drive down the street and it makes me feel good and proud of my 76 eleganza. Here are a few pics.

That really did come out nice, you should be proud of your efforts. I've always heard that the main part of a paint job (or any restoration) is the actual prep work, and the actual spraying was the easy part.

Do you have any estimate of the time it took you to prep the coach?

You did all that in your driveway.....holy cats !! It turned out GREAT !!

I can see from all of the sanding and prep work that you spent a LOT of time on
it Lynn.....it sure paid off, you should be proud of it !

Nice job !!

There is no way I would have had the guts to attempt a job like that myself.

George, between all the body work to repair the cracked doors and remove the top lights along with 53 holes repaired on the roof, i would estimate about 400 hours. But it was easy because of the enjoyment that this rv returns to me.

How did you repair the holes in the roof? I would like to remove my ladder and roof rails at some time in the future, but was wondering how I'd be able to patch the holes that would be left.

George, the small screw holes in the roof were easy. I took a ballpeen hammer and dimpled the hole down enough where I could use a pop rivet and epoxy to level it back up. The larger holes were filled with fiberglass matt and cloth plus epoxy on the top. I will post some pictures that should make it clear on the photo site.

I've done auto body and paint for 35 years and from the photos the prep and finished product look great.

You can hand sand it with 1500 or 2000 grit wet sandpaper and buff it out.

Shovelhead, I have a darker silver to do my highlight design. They tell me that I can sand and clearcoat this single stage urethane at any time later on. Right now I'm satisfied at how it glossed out as the extra coats were applied. I'll probably do the sanding and buffing when that next stage is completed. Thanks for the tip..

I see you have masked the glass area of your windows and left the frames
exposed, did you paint the frames same colour as the body at the same time?
Here in Australia Acrylic (Laquer) is a 1 pack paint quick drying but
usually requires cut and polish after application.
Urethane is a 2 pack mix (colour and hardener) slow drying (without
accelarator additive) has gloss off the gun and does not need cut and polish
How is your reference being acrylic urethane different?
The coach looks real good and although the supplies are expensive you would
have saved a lot of money doing it yourself.
In Australia to have a coach professionally painted in a shop for an average
job would be $20000

I was going to ask whether that was AUD or USD but then I checked and realized they're about at parity these days. Yikes.

How much would it cost to ship to Topeka? Smile

I painted mine 24 years ago in my driveway with Dupont Imeron I will say it was great entertainment for the neighbors. It was a lot more work than I wanted to take on and the supplies were expensive back then. I finish painted mostly around 7 AM to 8 AM when the bugs and wind were nil. I was grateful no one reported me to the cops since I lived in the California south coast air basin. The paint still looks good but I have had to re clear coat a few panels.

Andrew,
Add another $30000 to cover shipping there and back to get it painted at
Topeka.
It would be cheaper to get one of the good Mexican painters out here to do
the job and give him a holiday to boot.
We are currently a little better with our $ which it has not been for a long
time we were only getting around US75cents for our A$1

I like the monochrome look...sort of a GM Airstream look. Like it should have been a factory option scheme.

Peter, the paints name is acrylic urethane and it is not even similar to laquer. I have heard and read that it is mostly plastic and very dangerous to spray without a supplied air resperator. I looked like an alien with mine on dragging a 50 ft supply hose around. By using an HVLP gun, it kept the overspray to a minimum. It mixes 4 parts color, 1 part hardener and 1 part thinner. The hardener must be selected for the correct temperature or it will flash off to fast and look like orange peel. a Pro told me to add a little exera thinner to make it gloss. Evidently He knew what he was talking about cause it shines real purty.. When this stuff first came to market it cost over $400.00 a gallon. After a few of the old painters started having serious health problems, the price fell to $125.00 at the internet whole sellers. I always sprayed early with no wind and kept the driveway soaked all the time with water.

Outstanding work! Looks lovely and I like the side window frames matching the body color.

Q is - you've removed the clearance lights front and rear. I'd love to do the same, just concerned that I won't get passed a safety check as these are supposed to be on any vehicle over 80" in width. Do you think this will 'sneak by' (obviously you do) but based on the vintage of the GM or is it just that your jurisdiction is not so critical about requirements?

Thanks for the great pics!
