Page 64 and 65 of the June 2011 Popular Science Magazine has a spread on an inventor's "new device" which macerates sewerage and then injects it into the exhaust of a running engine to get rid of it. The article runs on about all the possible uses, including RV's.

It was not only used on GMC's of the 70's era but the Thermosan system did just that. Wasn't Matt Colie the last engineer on that project? I think I remember his saying that.

Little new under the sun.

Rob,

You are correct on all counts.
I have to get somewhere and read the article.
Yes, GMC was just one of several that offered the Thermasan as an installed option and thousands were sols in aftermarket.

I just looked up the Popular Science article on line .
This setup has a poop chopper.
Works the same as the one you worked on.

Sounds like a macerator running at a reduced flow rate and then injecting
waste into the exhaust. Is this a viable option?

That's how the US Navy does it when they're in ports that don't have a CHT
transfer setup. (Watch out for falling ash.)

So, is that on a very basic level how it works?

I misled.
The navy pumps the effluent under pressure into a burner. The nozzle that
the effluent is injected out of is next to an air jet and the sort of
vaporized mixture is sprayed out over burners using JP5 for fuel.
The Thermosan unit just pumped it into a hot exhaust system. Great for
tailgaiters when the system wasn't working correctly.

I finally found and read the article.

The only difference between this and an antique Thermasan is that the original never included a macerator. It had a window screen size sieve on the tank pick up mostly to keep paper from plugging up the pump. The design pick up placement left about a quarter of the tank so things could slosh and break up what was there. Our testing showed that this was a very workable method to reduce most of everything to liquid and solids small enough to pump.

He says it eliminates odors.... I think I got some news for him.
Even though neither our emissions rack (1970's technology) or the GC I contracted for some samples could show anything over the exhaust components, there was still an odor issue at any pumping rate that was worth running.

Ammonia needs a pretty high temperature and a catalyst (nickel works) to disassociate it. We could sometimes identify ammonia, but there were others in there.

We were loading ammunition because we had been challenged by several states to prove that this did not create an emissions issue.

Matt, could you please define "ammunition"? Smile

Larry,

In this situation, we were building the case to show that the addition of holding tank contents to and engine exhaust stream made no detectable change in the measurable emissions of an internal combustion engine. At the time I was running the program, Thetford had been stopped from installing units as an aftermarket in Pennsylvania and one other state because it was "a modification to the vehicle exhaust system".

So, I was running tests and compiling data for presentation. It never got there.
