We have had some discussions in the past about adding
accumulator tanks to minimize water pressure surges and pump
noise. Her is a a DIY one:

I actually made one a few years ago very similar to that one -- HOWEVER I soon found out that without a bladder in it to separate the air and the water, the air soon became absorbed into the water and I constantly had to put more air into it or it would stop working.

I switched to the Sureflow one that I bought at Camping world for about $25.00. (I just checked and it is now about $46.).

By the time you buy the parts and your labor I think you are better off buying one that works.

This is a great item to have. Our demand water pump is literally 10" below my
ear when I'm sleeping, it's a quite pump until it starts cycling every 2
seconds. We dry camp a lot and we know how to conserve water, that means just
turning on the faucet a tad to rinse our hands in the middle of the night. With
the accumulator, I never hear the pump at all.

Ray,

Is your accumulator factory or home brewed?

If home brewed - does it need to be charge regularly?

Thanks Ray,

Was wondering if anyone has had the same experience with the non-bladder
home made system. Of course the Schrader fill valve could be remotely
located in the propane cabinet.

Not sure what the schrader valve is for, doesn't say how much pressure to put in
it or anything.

I would think the pressure would have to be around 20 pounds. Not sure. I
already have all the parts. Now where to put it?

You should have gotten a manual with the unit.
It says to charge to 20 psi.
I am sending you a pdf copy of the manual to your email address.

I can't figure out how a Schrader valve can be useful either.
Granted, it could be used to pre-charge the system -- while it's
sealed. But, the first time a faucet is allowed to run without the
pump turned on, and allowed to run dry, that charge will escape. The
only "pre-charge" that will be persistent is that built up by the
water rising in the cylinder -- which should be mounted vertically
with the water in/outlet at the bottom.

A 2-gallon well pump accumulator, with internal bladder, fit very
nicely under one of the sofas in our 23' & works Great.

Of course, that would only happen without a bladder.

Here is what the Shurflo people say in their manual:

RV/MARINE APPLICATIONS The accumulator contributes to longer pump life, less noise, less amperage draw, and reduced water pulsation. The most efficient use of the accumulator occurs with the pre-charge set at the SAME pressure as the pump’s pressure switch “turn on” setting. Typically, a 40 psi [2.7 bar] pump will turn on at 20 psi[1.4 bar]. Therefore, the pre-charge should also be 20 psi [1.4 bar]. The pre-charge MUST be set in a“static” condition (pump off and at least one water fixture opened). Approximately 15% of the total volume will be stored liquid. Depending on pre-charge pressure to the accumulator, in relation to the pump turn on/off pressures, stored liquid is about 2 to 4 oz. [60-120 ml]. If accumulator tank pre-charge exceeds pump turn on pressure, the liquid volume is reduced.

I was thinking of using about three feet of 4" PVC since I have it on hand
and locating it over the propane tank. Put an elbow where the Schrader
valve is with a three inch rise to it and then put the Schrader valve on the
top of the elbow - or run a line near the tank water fill.

Still thinking...

Was wondering if anyone has had the same experience with the non-bladder
home made system. Of course the Schrader fill valve could be remotely
located in the propane cabinet.

If your home-made (or any other non-bladder) accumulator was plumbed in to the right spot*, it could double as a winterizing blow out.

I like modifications that have double uses!

* The "right spot" would be close to the the pump or the city water connection. (or both)

In previous RVs I've always used this method, which has a side benefit of reducing the pump cycling by acting as a virtual accumulator :

http://www.rverscorner.com/rvwaterheaterdriptip.html

This should work on the GMC water heaters as well, although I haven't done it on mine yet. It won't store as much as a separate accumulator, but I've found it to have a noticeable effect on pump cycling and residual pressure with the pump off.
