G'day,

I just posted three pictures of a Caddy fan I got off eBay to fit to the
Caddy 500 I've got in Aus.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=39218

I bought it because I had read that Caddy's run hot. My engine will be setup
to run on AutoGas (60% LPG/ 40% Butane) and it will run even hotter.

IIRC the auction noted it was removed from an ambulance or was it a hearse?

At any rate as you can see it has MONSTROUS blades at extreme angles and
they are flex blades, however, it appears that it came from GM!

I am loathe to run it as is with just the spacer as I am SURE it will put a
serious dent in mileage.

What's the consensus re running it with a clutch?

If I can make it fit that is!

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,

I wouldn't devote a lot of research time nor funds investment in a clutch
for that monster. 'Cause I'm betting after you run it (with just the
spacer) for about 5 miles, you'll be more than ready to remove it to protect
your ear drums. :-)

Yes, Cad500's do run hotter than Olds 455's. Just comparing the water pump
inlets to the heads of each would tell you to expect that. That, plus the
overheat warning switch at the rear of the block, set at 265*F, indicates to
me that the designers planned it that way. Just put a 15 psi cap on your AL
radiator and don't worry about a normal temperature of over 200*F.

Ken,

Good point, sitting in an ambulance or hearse five feet behind it WOULD be a
lot quieter than sitting on top of it! ;-) Plus if you were in either an
ambulance or hearse you wouldn't be complaining about noise! ;-) ;-)

I'll pack it up and take it with me and put it on a shelf in my workshop -

One of the problems with flex-fans is just when you need them the
most they flatten out and stop sucking air. They are great for idling
around, but put any revs into them and they stop working. Say you hit
a slope or a long grade and you need to drop into second gear. The
revs come up and the fan flattens out just when you need the cooling.
Anyway, just a thought. I had a clutch fan freeze up one time. Mileage
went to pot and the noise was pretty loud.

Rob,
There's one better. Same dia, same pitch, it has the extra added benefit
of serrations on the trailing edge of the fan for noise reduction. I have
an extra one if you want it.

Rob,

I believe that's a 75 commercial chassis fan.(hearse, etc,) They
had the same fan with a clutch
on the 75 Eldorado. It's on that gold-painted one in the GM
Museum. I've looked for one, but
never had the luck to find one. It looks like it's possible to
modify yours for a clutch.

Gary,
You correct about not having enough pulll when you need them.
I realize there are many makes out there, so as the ground hog said,"Gofer it"
