Well, I am looking for a deal on a portable ice maker. My 2nd one died in less than a year. Koldfront ran out of gas, freon.
Had my first one working but now a gear is slipping on the shaft. Hoping crazy glue might hold it but I got my doubts.
Anyone seen a bargain on a portable job, for the GMC?
Dan

Find a good used Uline at a slavage outfit. Ours just keeps on ticking. It
is 16 yrs old and makes 10 lbs per day.

Camping World frequently lists a sale on a portable unit.
They carry two intermittently. One is plastic cased and I
have one. It works okay. They also have a more expensive
one that is stainless steel.

The U-Line on my 1995 boat was still working when winterized
last fall, but the boat has since been destroyed.

If you are a "President's Club" member and perhaps otherwise
if you sign up for their emails you will likely get a "new"
sale bulletin about twice a week!

Send pic of gear. Might be duplicated in nylon or AL with a 4-40 or 3-56 set screw. Would need gear of course. You could take a small drillbit and drill between the teeth and tap in or glue a pin.,,,,PL

Steve,
I bought that one, thanks. It is likely the same one that I lost freon in under a different name. Oh well, will have parts if it breaks I guess. I think I finally got the gear glued back on the shaft in the little motor and timed it right. That is on my 4 year old unit so maybe I will leave the new one in the GMC and the old one in the house. I knew someone here would find a deal. Yesterday I looked and that one was 149.00

How many amps does one of these draw? Do you run it from your inverter?

I have one of the "small" portable icemakers, like the one Dan has that quit recently, and he just replaced. Mine takes about 160 watts to run, and the larger ones take closer to 300 watts. So, on an inverter, you can figure about 15 to 16 amps at 12 volts with some inverter inefficiency. It takes several hours to make a full "load" of ice.

This does NOT take into account the starting issue so I would expect you would need about an 800 to 1000 watt inverter to start the ice maker's compressor.

If you have a lot of battery capacity, you might run it on an inverter, or run it while traveling and the engine is operating, but for dry camping, probably it just takes too much power. I don't think Dan uses his when dry camping, and Dan is an ice nut!

You are correct Rob. I just buy ice when we are dry camping. The ice maker is the only luxury I do without while drycamping. I have a 2000 watt inverter with 4 6 volts but I don't even run it going down the road. I have but normally don't.
This stupid big icemaker has some kind of timing problem now. Trash it goes. Will scavage some parts and toss it. The new one should be in by the weekend. I can buy it til then. Should have bought 2 I guess but I really like the big one at home so may hold out for a good price on one of those.
I run them 24-7 when I have ac.
