My local mechanic thinks that I spun the main bearing. I was just driving along at 65 mph when I suddenly lost oil pressure and the engine started clattering. Not real loud but enough to get my attention. I pulled over and the engine seized up. Once it cooled down it will slowly turn over, kinda like the batteries are low. I still love my GMC!
Here is my question. I am going to need a new or rebuilt engine. What do I want? I am assuming another 455 but are there other things that I should consider while I am going through the process?

I'd probably check with Jim Bounds to see what his opinion is. He has dealt with Jasper Engines in the past, and probably can give you the best advice. It certainly would be easiest to rebuild the 455 as you don't have to do any other modifications.
If one of the suppliers has rebuilt engines available, that would be the easiest option and you could count on a properly built engine.

You'll need to supply a little more information.
These are the questions I can think of:
-- How long to you plan on keeping your coach?
-- -- What is your main goal? Getting it going or keeping it going?
-- How do you plan on using your coach?
-- -- Do you tow? -- how heavy is the towd?
-- -- Shorter trips or coast to coast?
-- Do you want to "push the envelope" or stay tried and true?
-- What kind of budget are you working one?
Others might want even more info.

Dick Paterson is probably the most meticulous 455 GMC coach engine builder you will find. His prices reflect the value of his expertise and reliability. Remember there is no such thing as a "free lunch", and cheap is not always good. Do Not use a local engine builder who says yea I can rebuild it.

Good recommendations from these guys. I'd go with the Patterson.

RF_Burns wrote on Mon, 09 May 2011 08:23 | I'll vouch for Dick as well. He did my engine 2 years ago. Not only does it rebuilt it, but he builds up your low end torque.
He's just north of Barrie Ontario, about an 8 hr drive from you but all 400 series hyways from Sarnia to within about 10 miles of his place.
I'm sure he can give you advice on what you'll need at the border both ways as well.

I can also vouch for Dick's engines. He installed one for me about 13 years ago and over 80,000 miles on it. It is still performing well. He adds enough horse power to take care of our eastern mountains and never a problem. I also have his carburetor and distributer. If the engine ever fails, I will have him make me another one.
