Which reminds me of a similar question I've been meaning to ask...

On both our coaches, there's a vertical tube that runs from where the toilet
mounts, down into the black tank almost to the bottom of the tank. What is it for?
To prevent sloshing?? Seems like what it mostly does is cause "stuff" to hang
up in the tube and not drain out properly. Also makes it really hard to clean
the tank or see how full it really is. Since it's on both our coaches, I have
to assume it's a common feature. Anybody tried modifying it?

thanks,
Karen

What I figured out after about 6 years was that you had to use enough
water when you flush. Everyone wants to conserve but then you end up
with that "plug".

Replaced my original toilet with a nice porcelain unit a while back and
that helped even more. Different flush mechanism. Ball vs slider. I
think it provide more power to the "drop".

Anyway... once I realized I couldn't be water-stingy I didn't have any
more problems with clogging up that pipe.

I just did a quick online survey of general RV replacement black tanks and fittings,
and it appears that this weird tube really is an oddity only for GMC's.

So here's a theory to present to the experts here: the tube
was a way to keep toilet paper and poo away from the thermasan inlet.

What say ye?? Other theories??

Otherwise, I don't see the point of it.

Karen,

If you are talking about the pipe from the toilet into the black tank -- on my 73 it screws into the top of the tank and only goes in to the depth of the threaded fitting.

If you have replacements perhaps they are the standard length and no one wanted to bother cutting them off. Our black tank is probably a lot more shallow than most.

Karen,

Are you referring to the sewer down-pipe itself or another pipe?

If another pipe, I don't have a clue.

If the sewer pipe, I suspect what you're seeing is a black water tank with a
slip fitting for that pipe. The installer, perhaps to be SURE the pipe was
inserted "far enough", left it TOO long. With the flexing of the top of the
plastic tank, an inch or two of pipe into a slip joint is a good idea, but
the pipe should be at least 3-4 inches off of the bottom, IMHO.

Almost as bad, the vent pipe is often inserted too far into the tank. That
allows the liquids in the tank to reach the vent pipe before the tank's
full, preventing fumes from venting through the vent pipe. Guess where the
fumes go then -- as soon as you flush. They may even escape before
flushing, through the tub, shower, and sink traps.

I find a permanently mounted black water tank flusher to be very handy --
eliminates running a hose inside to a flushing wand on those rare occasions
when I fail to flush after travelling and wind up with coagulated waste.

When I changed the black tank on my 260 nothing stuck into the tank.
I replaced the "O" ring vent pipe/sink drain couplers with those nice
rubber couplers.
