emerystora wrote on Fri, 06 May 2011 12:58 | I never had that problem with my GMC but prior to that I had a Travco that kept losing hubcaps. I solved that by drilling a 1/4 inch hole in the dust cover of the hub and then brazing in a bolt with the threaded end sticking out. I then drilled a 1/4 inch hole in the center of the hubcap. When I put on the hubcap the bolt went through the hole and stuck out just enough to put on a stainless washer, nut and cap nut. I tightened the two nuts together so as to jam them. I never again lost any hubcaps.

For the stock hub caps, I just took them off. Haven't lost a single one since! I kind of like not having anything covering the dust caps on the hubs. I allows easy checking of bearing temperatures.
A local GMC'er used to go around the edge of the cap with a block of wood and a hammer. Dented up the edge of the cap put they stayed on.
For a while, I used plastic "wheel simulator" hub caps like the ones JimB sold. <http://gmccoop.com/hub_caps.htm> or ebay Item number: 320447855619. This is a cheap way to dress up any coach with steel wheels. I smack around the edges with my fist to ensure they are seated. I haven't lost any when I remember to do this... You also have to watch the little metal clips. They sometimes fall off when removing the caps from the wheel.

First go around the entire cap and bend the tangs out to give more tension before installing the caps with a rubber mallet.
Then hold them in place with nylon (clear or almost clear) cable ties. Two per wheel.
The problem is those steel wheels, unlike Alcoas or Eagles, flex as you drive the GMC. The caps work their way off over time from the flexing. If you drive slowly and listen you can hear the creaking of the covers as the steel wheels flex.
A few years back there was a company making aftermarket GMC caps. I would not waste your money. Instead I would save it and put it toward a new set of Eagles.

I've lost both GMC hubcaps and the plastic ones that the Jim's sell. My solution is to have GMC's on one side of my coach and the plastic's on the other. I started out with 6 of each. With 3 of each on the coach that left me 3 spares. I'm down to one GMC and 2 plastic spares AND, I check each time I take the coach out to make sure they're fully seated. I purchased the coach with new 16.5 tires and I'd like to at least get a couple of years on them before I go to Alcoas or Eagles and new tires $$$$.
