As some of you may recognize I've been a lurker and a wannabe for a long time. Well I bought a GMC, the only problem is it's not a GMC MOTORHOME. It's a year 2000 GMC YUKON 2500 HD with 4WD and a 6 liter motor. It's HUGE. If someone was looking to put a more modern powertrain in a GMC Motorhome, perhaps the engine, transmission and transfer case from a GM SUV or 4WD pick up truck could be a starting point. As GM says this thing can tow a bunch, I'm sure the weight of the SUV and the allowable trailer weight is MORE than a coach, and it has more than 3 speeds in the tranny. If you started with a wrecked 3500 4WD, I think you would also get front hubs and other stuff good for a MH.

If the economy does not destroy the interest in motorhomes and price us out of the sport of camping, in time I would not be surprised to see a GMC fitted with the 4x4 chassis of something. There are always those out there that like to twink and make things different. Only in the case of a GMC it would be higher and it would have tag wheels in back before or after the 4x4 drive wheels.

The GMC will sit high with big tires with heavy treads with, or without some wild paint scheme.. as long as the money is there, anything can happen.

There is a truck that has the camper end of a GMC on it, engine and cab are gone, really high but does not look too bad, actually looks up to date, lots of storage added...

I enjoy the low floor and comfortable ride of the OEM GMC but for one that might have a bad frame, sticking on the back of a new truck chassis is a good option for an old dream..

Jim B has fitted diesel motor and frames from shuttles under a GMC body, but there is a lot of space compromised, then again, they were built for special purposes and of course in true JimB fashion, look fabulous...

4x4 GMC, then you can really be by yourself in the wild....

Larry,

Do a Google search for "wothahellizat" and you'll find an off road 4x4
camper built by Rob Gray. He's a mate of Mark Bennett.

The current unit is called Wothahellizat 2.

There are also the trucks that are used in the Paris - Dakar Rally which are
awesome.

Rob M.

Thanks Rob, I am familiar with the Wothahellizat and the building of the Wothahellizat 2.

Rob has not done much talking, at least I can not find it, about the second rig. The site seems unusually quiet. He must be having a great time though... and He does interesting work, looks good when he is done and he is always sharing information.

Would like to see more of #2 like he did #1, hope he finds time to do that.
