Probably a good idea with each gasoline stop for the first couple of oil
changes so that you can monitor oil consumption. It is not at all unusual to
see oil use in the order of a quart every 1000 -1500 miles on a good running
engine. Some burn more than that, some less. These engines are 1970's
tecnology and they work really hard pulling a 12,500# vehicle.

Are there free download-able manuals for these motorhomes. I found them a long time ago and sent them to Mark. They are on his "work" computer, not here. We want to have this info before we pick up the unit on Monday.

We don't want to drive this 10 miles without checking oil.
There isn't a dipstick, but another screwy device that "monitors" oil.
We want to check oil level now, i.e., how much oil is in the machine NOW without draining the oil.
Is there a way to do this when there isn't a dip stick?

The original dipstick is found under the driver's side hood -- near
the brake master cylinder. The dipstick tube came out of the engine
block between number 5 & 7 spark plugs -- about 18 inches and then
connected via flare fitting to the tube running to the front.
Something must still be in place that will allow access.

Thank you.

Mark left the building.
He was describing some sort of tube as you described.
I will tell him about placement near spark plugs.

Again thanks for the info and the link.
Will get back with you upon his return.

Yes, the picture is what Mark says should be there...But he's thinking this has broken off as there is a plastic tube....He'll drain the oil there and put 5 quarts back in and be done with it until we get it home.

The manual download has commenced...
Thanks Jim, Dennis and Mike for your immediate replies.
Very helpful.

IF you are putting fresh oil in it. Change the filter also and put in 6 quarts. If no new filter then you are correct by putting in 5.

Ken, I do 5 and filter. I know it is full as I checked when engine was dry this time.

That is basicly what I did... The tube was broken off my '77 when I picked it up in Utah. I did put in 6 quarts on the theroy that any extra would burn off rather quickly. Unlike the transmission, better slightly more than slightly less.

I am assuming Mark knows this...

Reading some of your posts reminded me of this lady's blog:

I found it interesting to read the part when her husband is taking parts of to fix it...

We're nearer North Dakota not far from Billings, MT.
We are "plains" people, though I love the Idaho/Montana border we don't get there often. Yaak is the Montana "town" of my dreams. I would like to "someday" spend a week there. As of now we only pass through Western Montana on our way to Scappoose, Oregon via Spokane/Puyallup Washington though my favorite place is Seal Rock, Oregon on the West Coast.
