How did everyone survive? I hope we hear from everyone today. Lots of damage everywhere. Much loss of life in Ms, Al, Ga, and Tn. So sad. Our prayers are with everyone in those areas. I have lots of family in North Al. Teri has been contacting them.

We had no damage here at Bean Station. I learned at coffee that several
couples went to the barn and into the pit at about 9:30-10:00 last night.
Most of us stayed in our coaches. There were a couple of brief light hail
episodes among lots of violent, bright, thunderstorms. Rivers running down
the hillside. But no reported damage.

Thanks for everyone's concern.

The pit would most closely conform to the National Severe Storms
Laboratory recommendations for shelter from a tornado! Below
ground level offers the most protection!

Do NOT take shelter under a highway bridge! When on the road,
take shelter in a culvert or even a ditch. The lower and deeper
the better!

We have been through a tornado WITHOUT a shelter and I do _NOT_
recommend the experience! Never again!

Heavy rain last nite here at BS, cool and cloudy now. Everyone is fine. Looks like the place to be here in TN.

Glad all are well, though this certainly was a nasty weather situation. My heart goes out to all of those people that lost their lives from the tornados.

Why is it not recommended to get under a highway overpass bridge? It seems that this would be a fairly safe place as I think the structure could withstand much more wind and debris than being out in the open.

Most highway overpasses do not have any kind of crawlspace that would
provide much shilter from the side (no "girders" so to speak). There
is also a wind tunnel effect. There are also ground effects that slow
the air down close to the surface of the ground, but up an embankment,
not so much.

That video you see of the folks who rode out the direct hit of the
tornado by sheltering in that overpass were lucky due to the
particular geometry of that specific bridge, and they only had to face
the trailing side of the twister.

Several people were killed under an I-35 underpass
on 3 May 99 just five miles from me. One was an
infant that was torn from her mother's arms and
not found for almost a week.

National Severe Storm Laboratory (NSSL) did an
analysis of the Andover, KS (120 miles north of me)
where those lucky folks hid under the bridge.
As Robin said, they were VERY lucky to escape.

That 3 May 99 visit from Mister Twister (F4 when
it came through our neighborhood) took my house,
travel trailer, ham antenna tower and antennas,
and six other vehicles.

Follow the advice given by NSSL that I provided
in an earlier message!
