Desmond,
Thanks for the link.
After looking at the paint job, I personally like it better than the original, but it destroys the value as a collector item. (I do not think the paint is nice enough to make up the value.)
Does anyone make a reproduction spare tire cover like that? (Maybe a little less prominent ridges.) If supplied blank, it could have a market well beyond the GMC community. Who wouldn't want a big beer bottle cap on the back of their Jeep?

Mike,
Milt Wade in Las Vegas had a mold made off an original Coke tire
cover. He should either still have it or
know of it's whereabouts.

I think it would be neat to get one made
and put one's favorite brew logo added!

It would be neat.
Although getting a "cease and desist" letter from the IP
attorneys at "one's favorite brew" might be discouraging.
These companies are fire-breathing dragons when it comes to
brand IDs and licensing.
Not that Disney is a source of favorite brew, but they are
an outstanding example of how uncompromising they can be.
Some years ago I was contracted to record a performance of a
group that was doing some Disney material. I was informed
that Disney was intending to put representatives in the
audience, and that they would terminate the performance of
any Disney material if it was recorded without permission.
(The group obtained performance permission in time to avert
a scene, but the Disney people were there.)
Likewise, NFL teams are quite jealous of their branding. A
small concern that produces very interesting and giftable
NFL-style materials was not allowed to produce materials
that displayed a certain team's logo. When I inquired of
them as to why, they told me the licensing contract was so
onerous that they just couldn't do it.
So, I'm guessing the owner's of the IP associated with one's
favorite brew would be as protective.
It would be neat, though.

Being in the sign business, I can attest to the aggressiveness of the
copyright holders and licencing and brand identification of many companies.
Years ago we did a banner campaign for Pepsi-Cola, I asked what I needed
from them to reproduce their logo. They said nothing as long as it is used
in good taste and the registration R is present. Coke is a whole different
animal.
I have never had an issue with the branding folks, but there are those out
there that will do anything for a buck. I have seen reps from GM at some of
the larger car events shut down, confiscate material and equipment and
prosecute vendors using their logos. Usually after a preliminary warning.
Not worth loosing $20,000 of equipment for a few bucks. Besides, if you're
on the right side of these companies, they will pay you well to install
their materials.

Harley Davidson Motorcycles is really aggressive in searching for unauthorized use of their logos, about a year ago I designed a customers website that sold vintage motorcycles. On the front page of the site was the various logos of manufacturers, with in the first week I got a notice of unauthorized use of logo and or name. Unless you are a dealer you can not use their logo or the words Harley Davidson without motorcycle(s) on the end. To this date have never heard from Triumph, Honda, BSA, BMW, I even got a thank you letter after it was taken down.

I think I read somewhere that Harley-Davidson is
second only to Coca Cola regarding the world-wide
recognition of their logos.
H-D seems to be especially critical as to quality
of any merchandise they license for manufacture
by other companies.
Big time universities are also jealous of their
logos and royalties! They especially hit upon
flea markets where it is almost guaranteed that
the merchandise is non-authorized ripoffs.

John,
And rightly so!
There are several anecdotes about HD the first was when they tried to
trademark the sound that their V-twin engines make. They fought that battle
in the courts for six years and finally gave up.
The second was when they tried to restrict the use of the term HOG after
they started the Harley Owners Group. They aggressively pursued a shop in
San Jose, CA and won that case. Then they took on a shop in Seneca Falls, NY
called The HOG Farm. The owner stood his ground as he had been using the
name since 1969 or thereabouts which was YEARS before HD registered the
term. At the end of the day the judge sided with The Hog Farm.
I met the owner once at a motorcycle aftermarket show, his name was Andy
Grottelli (or something like that). He told me that HD's corporate lawyers
kept messing with him. He would have his lawyer accompany him to a hearing
and HD would file a continuance for one reason or another. The main reason
was to try and get Andy to give up. As noted above he did not and won the
case!

I understand that Harley (during the 1980's?) made more money on mechandising than they did on sale of their bikes.
For that matter, such may still be true.

Harley Davidson isn't the only one. A company I formerly worked for (known
for it's consumer devices) did it's fair share. We, as reps in the field,
were trained to spot inappropriate uses so we could notify the offending
individuals and help them take corrective action before attorneys got the
word.
A kinder, more gentler approach.
