Psint scheme fans,
Earlier today I completed and uploaded a paint scheme (ignore the colors)
that may be of interest to some of you in the market for a scheme.
How it came about -- while driving back from GMCMI in Patterson I looked
more closely at all the motorhomes that would pass one direction or the
other. I've seen folks attempt a more modern look on the GMC and ruin the
lines of the coach itself (in my opinion). There just isn't room on the side
of a GMC to put all the waves and curls that can go on a 35- or 40-foot
coach. In looking at the big boxes I seemed to favor those with a simpler
approach for the "full body paint" styles. After giving it more thought, I
sat down and come up with this design. It has some waves. It even has a curl
that's a throwback to the late 30's or early 40's.
It also gets away from the "raccoon" look that's beginning to be unoriginal
as well as from the all horizontal scheme that has worked for a long, long
time (and still works if done well).
This one gives a bit more modern look (as far as contemporary paint schemes
are concerned) without violating the design line of the GMC. It's also not
too radical.
It's another example of the type of paint schemes I can create (though I
didn't spend much time with color rendering and shading).

I like it, though it's not at all what I expected from your description. I was expecting the long tear-drop that you'd see on buses from the '40's and '50's.
It's modern but not slab sided swoopy.

Byron, I am always amazed at how fast you can come up with these designs and they always look sleek and seem to fit in with the coach.
I have been working on my stripe design for a very long time and if I could keep from second guessing my first drawing, there would not be a second, third, fifth, tenth, twentyfifth....etc drawing.
My fingers are crossed that my coach will look as nice as what you draw up.

Larry,
Thanks for the compliment. I'm not as handy with a set of sockets as I am
Adobe Illustrator and looking for good examples. This design is actually
more like what the SOB manufacturers started doing (and quit doing) a dozen
years ago. Coaches of 2000 to 2002 had only a hint of what they have today.
I think the new designs is a plot by 3M to sell lots of tape.
I'm glad you like this design. I'm not fond of the colors but it is what 60%
of the newer units are using. I fail to understand why brown is so popular.
I guess it's better than yellow.

Very nice Byron, and now that we know that Larry has a paintable center strip to
replace the black rub strip, that opens up a whole new game.
As far as the more traditional straight line designs, I really like Bob DeKruf's
(sp) design, John Shotwell recently repainted his coach with that scheme and I
had a similar scheme designed. Then the wife got involved and said, "you're
engineer brain thinks in straight lines and 90 degree angles (which I must admit
it does), we need a different design with some curves and character".....and
naturally she won....but, I love the new design and am happy she made me push
the envelope on it. Can't wait to get it back in 4 more weeks !
Oh, and some time ago people were having discussions on coach names, well, since
we do most of our camping on Lake Superior, and it has an Eagle Wing design,
we've renamed out coach
the "Great Lakes Eagle". Again, Lisa came up with that.

I had no idea you were hard at work. It looks like you have a great template
to work with. :>)
That Coke scheme is a tremendous one. I wonder why no one has copied it.
Now that you've shared opinions (which are respected), here's one for you. I
think your Sterling Mist needs an off white for the top. In my mind the
difference is too much.
BTW, I like how you copied the one line of the Coachman stripe. Coachman
messed up a good idea, I think. Larry Weidner improved on it but I like your
concept better. You're wrap-around red stripe looks good on the white coach
is a neat idea.
Agreed - in 1978 GMC hit on nice striping. It just took them a while to get
there.
Also agreed - dark on bottom looks nice especially if you have shiny alloy
wheels. However, dark bottom shows dirt worse and hides lack of polishing of
the alloys. You pick your poison.
We should get together some time.

Four more weeks? Wow, what a gestation period!
Bob's paint scheme is very nice. Of course, some dudes within GM did his and
they probably got paid better than I do and had a degree from some design
school. Mine is from Hard Knox U. (just recently upgraded from College
level). Shotwell's take off is very nice but, of course, has no curve. The
GMC does have curves.
When I saw John Sharpe's paintable strip I knew Larry had a good thing
going. Yes, it opens possibilities. This Wind Swept design takes advantage
of that possibility. Enhancement's windows help it, too.

Mike,
I really like your 1977 Birchaven - the blue and grey scheme. I have a 1973
Glacier and was thinking of leaving the blue where you have the grey and
changing where you have the dark blue to a darker grey or gunmetal grey.
Two reasons, my Dad was in the 29th Division in WWII. Landed at Omaha
beach D-Day - the same unit as portrayed in the Saving Private Ryan movie.
He received the Purple Heart and tons of unit citations. Very little of
which he ever talked about. Second reason, I have a 1956 Thunderbird and
the original color was gunmetal grey. That is another whole story.
Painting is a long way off though.
And everything is subject to change.

Byron,
Really nice design, lots of character and not overly busy.
Before I had my Palm Beach painted at Topeka Graphics in 1997, my wife and I spent about 2 years looking at various designs and color combinations. Always take your time and pick something that pleases you.
And now my feel good story: At the 2002 GMCMI Mobile, AL convention, Michael Lathers (the guy who "designed/styled" the GMC) and I were sitting out near my coach having a cool one and discussing the history of his work in the design of our favorite vehicle. At one point I noticed he seemed to be studying my coach and he remarked, "if we were building these coaches today, that's how we would paint them". Needless to say, I felt higher praise couldn't be found.
Excuse me while I get my feet back on the ground. I might do it slightly different today, but 14 years ago my Engineers brain said this was it:

Bill,
There is no doubt that your coach has a tremendous paint scheme. It is very
tasteful and handles the colors well. The first photo I saw of your coach I
noticed how the thin and wide stripes were handles. Artistic even to the
white grill and headlight surrounds. The Corvette fender openings area a
definite and unique plus. Makes me drool.
You're right -- a pattern and color combination have to wear well. Some
schemes I've seen on a few other coaches won't stand up well.
Thanks for sharing your story. You did receive a true and well deserved
compliment.
On the Wind Swept design I wouldn't choose the color I've shown. I was just
using the most commonly used colors of the last five years. I've seen better
and may take some time to redo that image. May not, too. Chris wants me to
spend some brain cells on something else.
Good design and good color combinations are memorable. You have a memorable
coach.
