A non forum user, GMC owner has a spare engine, transmission, and final drive that he bought several years ago for spares. Happily he hasn't needed them and is thinking of selling them. He has no idea what they might be worth, especially in this depressed market. He's a friend of a friend so the following is the best information I can provide right now. These items have been stored inside since acquired.

The (motorhome) transmission and final drive were purchased new in 1980 from a dealer in Ohio who reportedly bought out all the GMC transmissions and final drives from GM. Anyone know anything about this? They are still on the pallet they arrived on.

The 455 Olds (car) engine is a rebuilt 1975. It is essentially a long block, has intake manifold, water pump, valve covers, oil pan (non front wheel drive). The rebuild included a valve job, new cam (can't remember exactly what cam), timing gear/chain, rings, and bearings. It was rebuilt in 1985 by a highly respected builder in this area. The engine rolls over (last weekend). There is also a distributer (unknown if point or HEI) and a Quadrajet (unknown if it is a Motorhome carb) may need re-jetting or a rebuild.

No idea of current value, but the transmissions probably came from Chuck Stoddard (Caspro). I had heard that he purchased the stock of GM 425 transmissions many years ago.

No responses show this is a difficult question, that's why I had to ask to begin with. At least any SWAGs, starting points?

One of our vendors can supply a special built transmission for under $1000, a fine roller cam engine would run about $5000. What you have could be useful, but keep in mind the seafood connection.
(say what??)
It costs the same to ship and cook bad seafood as good seafood, so a fishing town keeps the worst and ships the best for more profit.
So if I'm going to swap an engine and transmission, I am going for the known best since it is the same amount of labor.
An engine and transmission like you have would be of interest for someone nearby with a dead coach.
"just my take on it"

Gary,
With no knowledge of the rebuilder, I, personally, would consider the
engine as a bad core since it has already been rebuilt once. However, this
could work in the purchaser's favor since the motor would have to be
partially torn down and inspected closely by a professional. I would never
ever consider installing it without doing this first. This is costly and if
the seller is willing to take the cost of the teardown, inspection, and
reassembly off the asking price, give it some consideration.

I agree with Steve. There are rebuilt engines whose main claim to fame is
the bright blue GM corporate finish applied with an aerosol can and chrome
valve covers and air cleaner. Then there are purpose built remanufactured to
original equipment specifications engines that have been built under very
close scruitiny and inspection techniques with the proper cam, cam chain,
heavy duty pistons suitable for motorhome use & the list goes on and on.
Unknown rebuilds are in my opinion worse than a unmolested high mileage
motorhome core engine that is just tired, but has all the right matching
pieces. I know that there were made available to GM dealerships a fairly
substantial number of TH 425 Motorhome transmissions as new replacements for
ones that failed in service. Some of them are still around. If that is what
you are talking about, I would consider it a rare find and would show
definite interest in having it for a spare. Motorhome intake manifolds are
not as much of a problem since Rockwell is producing an aluminum
replacement, and the Edelbrock performer fits the 403 with no interference
issues. The really hard to find item is the Motorhome/Toronado oil pan.
These can be expensive when you do find one, but if you pull an engine from
a motorhome, you should have what you need. Just my opinion, use it if you
want.
