As I'm groping around the starter, the solenoid falls off into my hand!! One bolt falls to the ground, the second is gone.
I go to my work shop and look for two bolts of the appropriate size and reinstall the solenoid.
When I attempt to start the onan, the solenoid actuates, but the starter will not!!...just a lot of cklicking. So what's the deal???

Dan,
Onans aren't rocket science either, so don't be intimidated (no matter what it says to you).
That sounds like you have a simple bad connection, could be the starter ground at the starter or any connection involved whether you recently messed with it or not.
Put fingers on connection (if you can) while it is clicking, one will probably be getting hot.

Are you saying the starter solenoid is doing a lot of rapid clicking while you are pushing in the start button. If this is the case I would make sure the battery has a good charge in it. If the starter solenoid clicks each time you push the start button and it doesn't crank the motor I would suggest you push and hold the start button then use a large screw driver with your free hand to bridge the 2 large terminals. If it cranks now the solenoid contacts are worn. In which case you would need a new solenoid. Or if you are handy take the solenoid apart and dress or repair the contacts. I have always been able to fix them. When you reinstalled the solenoid you made sure it went together with no binding right? It would be pretty hard to mess it up.

Don,
One of the other suggestions will probably work but one more idea: Are you
sure you didn't install too long a replacement bolt? Sometimes the mounting
holes extend all the way through the starter casing so that an over-length
bolt can reach, and bind, the armature.
