Actually there were at least 10 Gads produced but as the description
raeds 5 were Grand prizes.
Based o n Build Dates all should have had 403 engines

Same with the Coca Colas. All 26 in the data base would have had 403
engines departing Pontiac.

I'd guess that the photos aren't recent. That's one question I always have
about nice looking photos. Keep in mind digital cameras have been around for
more than ten years.

Hi

Most of the photos have an April 9, 2011 date on them, but that is no
guarantee they were actually taken then.

Nice to see the copy of the '77 ad for the contest, that should be on bdubs
site.

Too bad the Coke logo is missing, has this been repainted?

Of course no logo probably keeps people from coming to the door to ask for a
free Coke.

One of my fond memories of the GMC motorhome is having stood in a GadAbout
within months after the unit (one of the few) was won by a man from
Louisville.

In the event you've forgotten or never heard the story, here goes.

A street person who collected the bottle caps (yes, young folks, Coke used
to come in bottles with caps that had to be taken off) won the GadAbout. He
collected most of the caps from one business where four, enterprising
gentlemen worked. They struck a deal with the guy that if he won the GMC
they'd pay the taxes and buy it from him for $10,000. He sent in around two
dozen cards for the contest drawing. He got to "keep" the coach a week
before handing over ownership in exchange for funds to pay the income taxes
and the extra $10K. That particular GadAbout, IIRC, was in the Coca Cola
museum in Elizabethtown where it sat dormant from around 1987 to 1996. The
bottling franchise, museum and contents in E-town were sold to a business
group that didn't want the museum. The contents were auctioned off including
the GadAbout.

The guy that services our GMC serviced that particular GadAbout when it was
delivered through the local Olds/GMC dealership.

Hi bdub

I was actually referring to the last B&W image entitled 'Win One For The
Road'

For a moment I thought you managed to get a new brochure up on your site
without me discovering it.

The 1977 GadAbout "ad" was a mailer I believe to the Coke plants about ordering one for usage of the GadAbout for the plants use. I have an original and it is printed on a heavy paper/cardboard. I also have the in store advertisement (10" X 24" on cardboard)that was likely used for the in store Coke display.

Other Coke/GadAbout unique items that may be missing from the ebay GadAbout are:
entry mat
Bottle cap spare tire cover
GadAbout & Coke identity on exterior
Coke dispensor panels for frig
towels in bath
GadAbout belt buckle
Gadabout key fob
original TV set
" CB

The yellow paint at the top rear appears much wider than the original which was only a couple of inches before it blended into the red color.

As time passes those unique items disappear until few know "what original was" :^(

According to the Registry records along with confirmation by Bill
Bryant who has studied the Coca Cola promotion, the Louisville
winner was William Bruce, who was homeless. The 2nd owner was a
travel agaency in Finchville, KY. They sold it to Bob Noll (now on ebay)
in 1980

That particular GadAbout, IIRC, was in the Coca

Again based on my records, I believe the GadAbout at the Elizabethtown,
KY
musuem was one ordered by the Kentucky Coca Cola Bottling Co who owned it
until 2002.

As far as total number of Gads built, there is 10 so far ...the 5 built
for the contest
at least 5 built for bottlers. One abandoned in New Orleans was spotted
by a Netter
about 10 years ago who confirmed it was a GadAbout just before the city
sent it to their
landfill.

Hi Dave,

There's a 76 23' Midas on the bay today:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320685924999

Curious serial number: MIT0032GN000098 (assuming Midas was building their own from Transmode shells, and assigning their own number), but how does that weigh in with the numbers and total count of units and such? Meaning - first time I see one that's not a TZE?

Thanks Dave,

Gord

Dave: It is a Crestmont, you might want to tell the seller it is a class A not a C since it is the 3rd one he has had..

My Norris built coach is registered in CA with the M1T0032GN00012 number assigned by Norris Homes. I thought it was odd, since everyone is posting a TZE number. But it is a Transmode and things are different through out. The factory manuals are only good for the basics.

Yes, but every Transmode had a TZE serial number issued by GM. It is on the little plate that is on the panel behind the small door under the passenger side windshield. The factory manuals cover the frame, suspension, engine, dash, air conditioning, windows and everything except the components that the body builder put on. There was no way that GM could anticipate what the various builders would do. That includes all Transmode conversions done by Norris, Avion, Coachmen, etc.

Different topic, I was considering removing engine driven ac system since it was damaged in engine fire. Will running the cabin ac off of the generator while underway provide adequate cooling while driving?
Thanks, Todd

Yes, but every Transmode had a TZE serial number issued by GM. It is on the little plate that is on the panel behind the small door under the passenger side windshield. The factory manuals cover the frame, suspension, engine, dash, air conditioning, windows and everything except the components that the body builder put on. There was no way that GM could anticipate what the various builders would do. That includes all Transmode conversions done by Norris, Avion, Coachmen, etc.

Not if its really hot out. I have used my roof air to supplement my dash air when it was really hot but I know that it would not have done it alone when it is over 100 deg. out.

Once I put my aux. evaporator under the dash I never again used the roof air while moving.

Does the aux evaporator operate in conjunction with engine driven ac?

Yes, you have to have an engine driven Air conditioning comopressor. My evaporator works in parallel with the existing dash air. The compressor is plenty big to run both.

You can get the details here:
