Good morning/afternoon/evening (take your pick),
I am expecting to attend the Bean Station Rally in a couple weeks and have been trying to decide on the projects I was going to work on. I have a question about what is actually possible to perform while parked at a rally and not in a garage with a lift. This is my first rally of any type and really don't know what to expect.
I was under the front end today and noticed that, in general, my front end suspension is in rough shape. The bushings appear to be hard and cracked, and everything is fairly rusty making adjustments look difficult to make. I was going to order a set of bushings to install but realized that I don't even know if it is possible to just replace the bushing without throwing the alignment out. Are jobs like this more suitable for a garage and not a rally?

Thanks Jim,
I fully plan to get dirty at the rally.
I am trying to plan my maintenance around what I feel comfortable enough attempting with the proper advice. My goal for the rally is to come away a good bit smarter than when I arrived. Unfortunately, that won't be too hard to accomplish.

Bob -- I'm right there with you. I didn't request "pit time" since I have mostly small and supposedly clean projects to do, but I'm hoping to get some of my jobs done and then help out fetching tools and learning from others.

I think replacing the bushings is a doable job at Bean Station. Especially if you get the Urethane bushings. They can be pressed in easily with a vice. Mark the positions on the adjusters prior to removing them and reinstall them in the same positions when you are done. You can drive it that way and take it to an alignment shop after you are finished.

Ken,
Is this a job that would require/benefit from pit time? This is all new to me, so I don't want to request pit time if I don't need it as that might take time away from someone that does.

Helpful? ...YES
especially on the lower ones which are the ones I would do first. They are the ones that really wear out. If you run out of time then the upper ones can be done later.
Talk to Chuck Boyd. He will understand what time you need on the pit or off the pit in the garage next door.

Bob,
It's my opinion that you should ask to be parked under the hard-floored
shelter beside the garage at Bean Station. While there might be a small
advantage to being on the pit for lower bushing replacement, that advantage
would be small. Better to leave the pit open for those jobs for which it's
almost essential. The location I suggest won't be in as much demand,
removing pressure to "hurry up".
Subject to a reminder shortly before then, I'll bring my wheel alignment
jigs and digital level, with which we can do a satisfactory alignment job.
