Albert,
I plan on going to Patterson.
I have a 1978 OEM Master cylinder I replaced with one from Jim Bounds .
The new one put out over 1500 PSI dead headed into a Gauge.
The Gauge I was using ,Max rang was 1500 PSI and it pegged ,the Meter.

Hey Craig ,
Thanks for the offer to do the measurements, I think it best to buy the
1978 one from somewhere and measure it . Looks like my OEM MC has 1-1/4"
pistons which I have long suspected due to only getting just over 800 PSI on
a pressure test about 3 years ago. I'll just hold for now and pick up one
on the way home from Patterson.
Cheers.....Albert

Hey Paul ,
Looking forward to seeing you there, I'll take the 78 master cylinder(MC) if you would like to part with it. I need to do some baseline measurements and do need a 78 MC. I plan to make up a table listing what MC's might be available to us and under what conditions. Leaving for Patterson in the morning . Thanks again & take care.
Cheers.....Albert

There's some mystique about the 78 master cylinder so actual data would be great, however, how do you know for sure that it is a 78. They are difficult to come by and I think Cinnabar is the only one that has them.

Bob,

In following this thread I read that Bob Drewes noted:

"Albert;

You are probably aware of this, the '78 had the second design MC and some of
the changes were in the pistons and perhaps the stroke. I seem to recall it
had slightly larger volume than the 1st design.

Bob Drewes"

Can you provide any more details vis-à-vis "la mystique" of this unit? ;-)

Does "la mystique" make it more desirable than the '73 thru '77?

Thanks,
Rob M.

Rob, a few years ago I tried to find more info on the 78 M/C. At that time Cinnabar was the only source at quite a premium. I have a 78 but assume that the original M/C was long gone. The manual only mentions "increased capacity" but that doesn't explain much but only raised more questions. At that time, nobody could explain what was different about it. This is the first time I've heard anything about different piston sizes and it sounds very interesting. Given that many mods are boing made to these brakes it sure will be interesting to learn more about the 78 specs.

I attended a Tech session on brakes at a Western States rally back in the mid 90's. During a Q&A session Wes Caughlin was asked what the difference was between the 78 and the earlier M/Cs. The answer was a part number change to accommodate the heavier weight of the Coachman Royal. It seems it was only a paperwork change
to help Coachman with their sales. It seemed likely story since we were unable to find any difference between the M/Cs.
