Finally obtained the # for a 16" steel wheel that fits 80mm calipers/etc..
28177
Am repainting then checking the fit and will get an email from JimK on what needs to be adjusted/ground off on caliper.

If they do fit, please try to share the information with the list. As our 16.5" tires become obsolete, this would provide a nice alternative for those that do not wish to upgrade to the aluminum wheels.

Harry wrote on Thu, 07 April 2011 20:56 | I have Firestone (Accuride) made wheels, #27994, that came off an early '80's GM 1 ton truck. Bore is approx. 4 9/16"
Here is a dealer with new wheels. Scroll down a couple...

I looked a little further and found this...
16x6K wheel P/N 29587 replaces...
27756
27994
28177
28374, etc.
| CBWood provided the bottom line, although it wasn't at the bottom of his post:
"the 29587's will not fit one w/80mm calipers.."
27994 might fit w/80mm calipers, but ACCURIDE ONLY SELLS THE 29587 (as a replacement for the 28177 and the 27994, and others). The 29587 is what has been described as "truncated cone". What GMCers with 80mm calipers need are what have been described as "dome shaped". I don't know if the 27994 is dome shaped or not, I don't have access to one. My $.02 would be that if you want to migrate to 16" wheels, and you (like me) prefer "flexible" steel to "brittle" aluminum, and/or your budget is as tight as mine, you have to find 6 domed rims at a wrecking yard. If you have a few more dollars to spend, the ones at http://www.trailerandtruckparts.com/16-x-6-Light-Truck-Dual-Mounting-Wheel-X-45460_p_928.html&catid=59 look to be domed, but I don't have the money to buy one (plus shipping) to find out if it works (much less enough nickels for 6 of them). If they would work, at about $100 each, they would be less than half the cost of aluminum wheels, AND THEY ARE STEEL. If a few folks from this forum want to go in as a group to have one of our fellow GMCers near Cypress, CA buy one and find out for sure if they would fit over the 80mm calipers, I could contribute $10 or $20 to the "experiment". Here is the bottom line on the 29587 one more time in case the reader dozed off while I was ranting:
"the 29587's will not fit one w/80mm calipers.."

these need/should be hub piloted although others can be made to work?

Any wheel needs a method to center it. Most dually steel wheels are flat and pilot centered. Hub piloted wheels are the only wheels that you need to worry about the pilot hole size.
If you use lug-centered wheels, you do not need to worry about pilot hole size... as long as it is big enough to clear the middle of the hub on your application.
If the wheel (steel or not) is lug centered, the lug nuts need to match the wheel. Sometimes that is fairly hard to get nuts that match both the lugs and the wheel.
(Note: If your spare doesn't match your 'road' wheels, make sure you carry 8 lug nuts that match your spare.)
