In anticipation of Bill Bramlett's visit to teach some of us a little about
TH425 transmissions, I had to move my 3 spares from the farm to my shop.
Then they had to be shuffled about for cleaning and placement. And, they
had to be lifted onto and from the work bench. Finally, as it worked, out,
we had to remove 3 transmissions from coaches and install rebuilt ones.

To facilitate all that lifting, I devised a simple little device which
proved to be very effective. I've just posted .jpg and .pdf versions of the
CAD drawing for it at:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=5741

Try it, you'll like it -- or find needed changes to pass to us.

Could you also tell us where you sourced the parts required for the rebuild -- and part numbers?

Dennis,

I picked a place essentially at random from a Google search, and lucked out:

http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/TH425.html

<http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/TH425.html>My choice was based
primarily on the fact that they had a generic list (elsewhere on the site)
of the items in their kits -- most had no indication.

The fact that they're located nearby in AL escaped me until the parts
arrived the next day -- drop shipped from CA. The one missing part (a
neoprene pan gasket) came the following day, drop shipped from KY. Prompt,
efficient service.

Only later did I learn that they have a competitor 40 miles from me. He was
most helpful also: We called at 2 PM on Friday needing a TH425 torque
converter. He didn't have it, but rebuilt one for us to pick up at 5 PM.
Can't complain about that. :-)

When Bill needed a 3rd kit, he got it overnight from that local dealer.

G'day

This looks far neater and user friendly than the chain and rope system I used, Ken thank you for sharing.

Ken,

Thank you for the parts information.

I would really enjoy participating in a transmission rebuild session!

Nice job on the lift jig.

Dennis

Ken:

I like the looks of your TH425 lift fixture. It's got to be better than using chains and worrying about them slipping.
Do you have any pictures of the device in use? I would love to see them.

Bob,

I thought I'd made some of a transmission hung with the lifting device from
the hoist I mounted on my work bench. But I couldn't find them when I went
to post the drawing to the photo site. And now the device is packed in a
foot locker at the "bottom of the pile" in the load for Patterson.

I'll try to remember to make and post some photos after we return.

Sorry.

I just put up a couple of shots of Ken's transmission hanger in action
that I took during the rebuild session.

Thanks, Richard.

Naturally, those are much better photos than I'd have had anyway. :-)

Someone's sure to wonder about the lower bolt: My original concept was that
the lower bolt would extend well through the bellhousing until time to
replace it with a bolt, then I'd remove the hairpin clip and withdraw the
bolt. In practice, that didn't work because the extended bolt was in the
way of installing the transmission. I then moved the hairpin to hold the
3/4" extension of the bolt and that's the way we always used it -- it's
never been moved again.

So, the drawing shows the lower bolt/pin welded in place.

Richard,

Thank you for the pictures. I was unsure just how it fit and worked.

Ken,

A minor design addition.
You said it is better balanced for the trans and final drive.
Well, if you stuck an ear rearward and drilled another hole, you could make it so it balanced in either case.

I am still annoyed that you waited until I got my trans down and back up to publish this. I may build one anyway just so I never have to use it.

Matt,

It's worth a try, but remember that hatch rail is back there.
