The new styles are not as low profile but they still look great. They also show
the 15,000btu model.

Best price I could find was the $599 plus the $99 shipping.

Although "Money Pit" came with two original A/C that
do seem to work, for these prices, I'm sorely tempted
to get one 15k w/ heatpump for the forward hole and a
13.5k low profile (no heat pump) for the rear bedroom.

With no working dash air, that 15k forward might help
a little if turned up to maximum.

Would the 4Kw in a 230 have trouble running that 15K AC?

My old AC works ok but it's loud, ugly and tall.

without problem in the past.

Kelvin,

My old BF does just fine.
It will run the AC (a 15k Carrier) and a microwave without breaking a sweat. It does have a Pertronix mod., but it did almost as well before it got that.

I had a serious reason to trade off the Coleman. . .
My barn door was too low by about 1-1/2 inches.

My Carrier LP's draw less current, are quieter, and look cool.

The low profile carrier won't fit on the standard rear bedroom roof opening
unless you mount it backwards. The opening sits very far towards the
front of the unit, so the back would extend past the rear of the roof.
There's a picture in the photo site of one of these units mounted
backwards to make it fit.

I thought that the consensus was that though the newer Carriers draw less amps, the old DuoTherm OEMS had better cooling. Is that not true?

Kelvin, like Matt said, not a problem for the 4 k. Our 74 has a 6k and we have just one air. Its a 15k Coleman, not that old, but boy is it loud. I would love to find a low profile 15k one of these days that is quieter than our's.

I thought that the consensus was that though the newer Carriers draw less amps, the old Duo-Therm OEMS had better cooling. Is that not true?

At the time these Duo-Therm units were built (1970's) they were the best cooling A/C's available - I remember seeing the test results that Duo-Therm had for all the brands. GMC also tested all the brands, and that is the main reason they switched to Duo-Therm. That front/rear air splitter in the original Duo-Therm units on the GMC was an idea we stole from the Mark IV, which was the original brand used on our GMCs. After Mark IV dropped out of the market the air divider disappeared - until Carrier came out with their unit.

All A/C's have increased their efficiency through the years, and I have no idea who would win that contest today. However, the largest unit you could run from a 20 amp circuit in 1975 was 13,500 btu capacity; today that is 15,000. Unless those figures are lying then you should have more cooling. (My Grandpa liked to say "Figures don't lie, but liars can sure figure")
